Storyline from the trailer looks gash. rest of the movie looks great.

ugh. visually it's great. i hate the idea of turning the major into someone who doesn't know the score.  looks like they slapped a bunch of scenes from the anime in there.. if they make her all weeny out and dumb it down so much.. referring to her reason to dive into the project 2501 then that's just a big disservice to the character. 

but we'll see.. maybe they leave room for nuance in there. i'll probably go see it anywyas.. looks like it'll be good to see on a big screen. i like popcorn.

LOL, I know - I actually have *NOT* seen the anime nor read the manga (I KNOW), so I am purposely avoiding that to judge the movie fairly, then review the source material.

Why have I not read or seen GitS? Honestly, when it came out, the 90's were just a dreary time for anime and manga (IMO), so I really avoided all the big things back then until the late 90's.

Same thing happened with Blade Runner vs Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep - Loved the movie, book put me to sleep.

the original gits movie is pretty boring, the series was much better.

hrm... not sure whether i'd called ghost in the shell boring. i remember when it came out it was somewhat disappointing because it was soooooo short. imo this was the first anime to seamlessly blend cgi and animation in a way that felt "realistic" and complimented the story- only there was very little of story.

i watched a special preview (basically 15 min) and this doesn't look good. one thing is scarlett johansson just looks awkward. it's like her head is too big and her fight scenes are meh. another thing is that in the original anime film, the major's eyes are both mysterious and sympathetic- but johansson doesn't seem to have that range so it ends up being a by-the-numbers "let's do that scene from the anime because everyone will want to see that"

Comparing Perfect Blue to Ghost in the Shell is like comparing Fight Club to Blade Runner. They're completely different.
