Well, you can always kickstart the best-of, and mark a 155 track boxset, vinyl etc as stretch goals

That's true... let folks pay for what they want...

Offering the tracks up on an MP3 player is far too expensive of a proposition, and frankly an annoyance - also, not really special, since again we already have the digital tracks - this is about creating something physical, and offering these tracks up in a higher quality as well providing a collectible item for the fans.

This doesn't really make sense though. We already have the digital files, however, they are not mastered and they are not lossless. How is a custom flash drive with all the tracks going to be MORE expensive than 10+ pieces of vinyl??

Cost effective - check

higher quality - check (if lossless and remastered)

collectible - definitely! (an official custom flash drive with aphex logo or whatever would be pretty slick)

Don't see the downsides to this...

The downside is anybody could do this (beyond the remastering) - there's nothing special at all about putting digital files on a flash drive (branded or not)...

I suppose it could be one of the stretch goals as suggested by ThatSpanishGuy, and would be a cost-effective way of delivering the digital downloads to buyers (versus having to send out codes via BandCamp)...

I kind of imagine a box set being a really stylish looking wrapped (in textured fabric to give it a premium feel) box containing 12 slimline clear CD cases, each with card insert artwork, and a booklet with photos provided by Richard of his equipment and studio, perhaps photos from the places where the tracks were made or relevant to the tracks, etc.

A vinyl edition could be a similar box, with 6 dual-pocket sleeves featuring the artwork/photos of the CD release, each housing two 180g vinyls... fucker would be HEAVY though.

You could have a more limited vinyl edition with tunes that are more aimed at DJ's (limited in the sense of less tracks than the CD boxset). Kinda like a limited Rave Colonel release.

I like your ambition, I'd be up for something like that too, depending on price

AB6 would be a good one to include

Really like those ideas. Hopefully... :aphexsign:

Yup, most definitely. A list cherry-picked by Richard or based on the most plays/downlaods in Soundcloud would work for me.

Add in some Bonus tracks, full titles and artwork and I'm there.

What ? I could still go for some Melodies from Mars.

How the fuck are you gonna ask for bonus tracks after he just gave away 150+ tracks for free? Like the Bonus tracks are gonna make you pony up, otherwise, nuh uh?

EDit: Sorry, I don't mean to come across as being rude - it's just...a bit cheeky to ask for more when he's already given so much, don't ya think?

Anyways, like I said - if he puts up mastered files for download, I'd cough up some cash. But I have no interest in some fetish physical object.

Not really. If he hadn't put the tracks up for free I would have gladly paid (up to some exorbitant amount) for them. Now that they've been given away for free, I'd need some kind of kicker to make me want to pay for what I've already got.

This is the funniest thing I've seen on WATMM in 2015

If done via WATMM, no I really doubt I would purchase it.

If done via Warp, obviously with some gracing of the project by Richard, I'd almost definitely purchase a CD/CD set.

What's the difference if we release versus WARP? It would still be a professionally-pressed CD or vinyl, etc.

To me, the difference is that this music is already done. (Well, I don't mean that he's done uploading old tunes . . . I hope) I mean it's 'done' as in, this is the way he chose to release it into the world: "fly away babies, good luck!" Of course we can gather that it's because he didn't want to take time to master and/or sequence it all (info via Syrobonkers if I'm not mistaken), and so he just decided to throw it out as-is, a crude mixtape for his mates, just as he'd put out a lot of music way back when; here's some tunes, they're not all the best I've done but I thought everyone might like to have a listen, so have at 'em.

Even if Richard approved a WATMM release, I don't think I'd be much interested, simply because it's not really necessary; I don't need these tracks mastered and on a CD. The creator of the tunes okayed it, so I'm not morally opposed, but unless there was some true extras or something, I don't see the need in doing a physical release. But that's not for me, plenty of people would obviously be interested, so wonderful.

If Rich got with Warp to put out some compilation or something of these tracks, I'd at least pay attention, because I don't think Warp would cheapen themselves by just running a quick mastering job on the mp3s and push it out. They would at least demand the DATs, get with Rich as to sequencing, perhaps include alternate takes/other unreleased NOT-AVAILABLE-ANYWHERE tunes/goodies, etc., and then release it all. But I really doubt any of that will happen, as we know Rich isn't interested in devoting much time to these older miscellany. The soundcloud downloads are the ultimate version of these tunes until Richard states explicitly otherwise.

tl;dr Soundcloud is how he chose to release it all, and that's the end of it IMO. Unless he changes his mind later, I'm not really interested in anything else from the tunes. This is their final form.

yes. It would be cool if it took something from the fanmade material, like the artwork and the track names.

but w-why do you ask joyrex? :emotawesomepm9:

You make valid points, and I wouldn't be surprised if Richard felt/thought the same way...

Yeah but if we were to found the right price to pay (meaning not getting any benefits from the crowdfunding), Rich wouldn't make any money from those tracks he released for free but the people who could possibly want physical format for those tracks (including me) could have it, and in a better way than just burning some CD-Rs and throwing badly impressed cover arts.

But then again, you know what they say about opinions... :emotawesomepm9:

Again, the goal here is not necessarily to pay Richard (the profits, if any would go to a charity), but give these awesome tracks a life beyond SoundCloud and the eventual day they cease to exist.

Going off the subject a bit, it's going to be interesting say 30 years from now when CDs are (probably) a thing of the past, and unless another physical format replaces it (unlikely), all these digital compositions, unless archived somewhere, will cease to exist when their delivery mechanisms potentially cease to exist. Think of all the digital items you currently have that there is no physical backup or additional copy exists - Sure, right now you can download them again from Bleep or iTunes, but what about the day those services aren't around anymore?

Bro, haven't you seen Ghost in the Shell? The genie is out of the bottle. This shit is backed up tens of thousands of times over, at least. NSA got your back. It's like God Emperor Leto's Golden Path. It would take some kind of global catastrophe to threaten these tracks.

The magic of the internet is the only reason I'm still able to enjoy half of the albums I purchased in the 90s and then beat the shit out of hauling around in a CD wallet. Vinyl's only slightly better than CD because degradation is part of the appeal. Not exactly an archival medium.

The Internet will not always exist in the form we have grown up with, and nothing lasts forever. I care deeply about the preservation of both music and the metadata associated with it. Anything to widen the variety of media upon which the information is stored, and decrease rarity are good things.

I think an album of 12-16 songs would be great... or Analogue Bubblebath 6! Anonymously uploading all of this music for free is the way it was released, though. It doesn't need a wild box set.

I said I would be into vinyl previously. But the thought of a 6++ vinyl box set or whatever actually scares me (I never go for those, for both space and cost reasons). I'd prefer 12"s, so I could pick and choose one or a few.

Edited by Marked x 0ne

How about a limited pressing of ab6 (white label like ab5), and a large selection of the dump on multiple cd's? (still think the custom flashdrive/mp3-kinda thing instead of cds would be cool)

when I think it makes me laugh... i guess this project a reality and those who said no will still be interested in this project and buy it... it will be fun to see contradictions...

How about a 50 tin set of wire recordings stored in a really long aubergine coloured tube! Yeah! That would be great! I find the thought of everything else really scary because I don't like to pick up more than one record at a time due to my really weak arms. Also I think the fact that Richard put these tracks on Soundcloud is a really profound statement of some sort and it obviously means he will never want to do anything more with these tracks even though he wrote a comment on Soundcloud saying he might do something more with these tracks at some point. He didn't know what he was doing when he typed that! I don't think we should even dare to consider doing anything more with this and we should just leave everything as it is because I am allergic to eggs in my pudding and this whole thread should be deleted imo
