elseq 1-5

hmm...

dunno, especially with synthesized music I find it's pretty fun to look at the waves one way or the other (see scope pics above).

Just a plain ol scope can tell you so much about a signal (or the relation between signals such as left/right).

things which aren't obvious from listening are easily revealed...

it's also a dead honest, spot on & beautifully simple form visualization..

Basically if you don't have a scope you're a noob.

Elseq definitely has the most nocturnal/nighttime vibe of all ae lps/eps. My fav is still ep1, but that is subject to change

Agree, on the nocturnal. I find a noticeable difference in how much more I enjoy it at night. Downright weird.

Wow I'm having a tough time getting into elseq 5. I'm surprised it's one of people's favorites. I guess I really like some of the concepts/sounds behind it, but these are some of the songs with the least development of all of elseq 1-5, and it gets a bit boring hearing the same thing for ten minutes. I don't know maybe it's too minimal for me right now. I wouldn't be surprised if it grew on me a lot though because it seems like one of the few elseqs with a clear focus.

Scalded, my thoughts exactly after listening to Elseq5, but may be subject to change.

Yes! Some of the tracks really shine in a different way around this time the witching hour (pendulu casual, pendulu hv moda, freulaeux, oneum, eastre). These long hypnotic tracks. I wait until dusk before listening.

imo "elseq" does not definitely sound like jams. this review is only echoing what lots of people on here have been taking for granted, that this release is autechre jamming or improvising or running software that's being controlled in real-time. it's certainly possible that this is true, or that at least some of the tracks employ such methods. but imo there is nothing about this music that is just so obviously "jams" like pitchfork and some peeps on this forum are suggesting and if it wasn't for the fact that sean has talked a lot about computers and spitting out albums in real time i'mnot sure what it is about this release that's justscreaming "this is just some edited jams by the electronica duo the 'chre."

fact is we have no real idea about autechre's compositional processes. and this seems like a fairly deliberately contrived mystery on their part; for all their willingness to discuss software stuff or how they make albums by pressing record and jamming away, they also seem to walk back many of these claims and insist tracks are made meticulously note by note or sean will get pissed and tell people they don't know what they're talking about when they employ the term "generative." personally, i don't think they're being mysterious to construct some cool idm identity, i just think they're artists who don't wish to be pinned down by cheap shop talk in lame interviews.

anyway, this pitchfork review is, unsurisingly, shit. there's no way some reviewer sat down, listened to 4 hours of autechre and just came to the conclusion that these are jams. the reviewer probably played elseq on his computer while browsing the internet to find things to write in his assignment and came up with "it's long" and "it's jams."

elseq 1 is 7.0 - OK, i got that, rather straightforward

elseq 2 has 6.6 - eh? I guees it looks nice, also shows that it's a bit worse

6.9 for elseq 3 - porn reference?

7.1 for elseq 4 - maybe it has to do with quantity of tracks on EP, you need at least 5 for a 7

6.8 for elseq 5 - so they all have different ratings, something interesting is in the baking
