Anyway, Jenkinson’s new EP thankfully sees the Warp stalwart putting down that fucking bass guitar. It’s called Numbers Lucent, and is a homage to early 90s rave in the same way Zomby’s recent album was. You half expect (or at least half want) this to be a case of an old veteran showing a young pretender how it’s really done, and at times, Numbers Lucent is cracking. But it’s so self-evident that this is a Squarepusher record; Jenkinson never seems happy to let a track ride out when he’s onto a good thing, and most of Numbers’ songs end up so weighed down in noodling and over-sampling that the riffs and melodies that made them sound good in the first place are barely audible. Simply put, he over-eggs the pudding. You can’t knock Jenkinson for being himself, but Zomby’s simpler, less cluttered take on hardcore is miles preferable to this.

I expect the 4 unreleased bangface, not the 3 acid n' bass tracks he played before, and the 2nd qball track.

The big question is if the tracks have the nice distorted basslines, or if he releases the track "naked"

like "talk about you and me" on square window....

Theres about 110 cum recepticles in the autechre forum who "expect" a soundboard recording of a live show they did in March. They started going on about it months ago and made 15 threads about it. Now a new thread has popped up. The embarrassment oozes out of that thread, i can't even click on it. I cringe too hard.

The samples sound awful, fuck amazon, I bet for $5.94 for the full album it will be DRM'ed to hell.

Ok, maybe it's just Squarepusher's lo-fi sound.

Man, so far this is really catchy.

1. The first song is really awesome, kind of unique for Squarepusher, it has a kind of chorded stab line going on, and the drums have that kind of 80s roll and flourishes.

2. "Paradise Garage" keeps the same 5ths stabs going on, but with real electric bass and cheesy drums and cymbals. He is using a trilly synth sound at about 2 minutes that I find extremely appealing, it reminds me of some stuff from hello everything. I'm not sure I really like this song that much though, its a little bit lame for at least the first few minutes.

3. "Heliacle torch" has a bass sound that he has used in the past, with an organ part that builds up in volume. And then it goes into a kind of nonsense melody. But the drums are really tight and the. Remind me of the drums in girl/boy snarerush mix looped or something (not literally, also might be a different song). Hes still keeping it pretty simple, the drums don't get too fucked up. Chord progression is really strange, hello everything like.

4. "Star Time1". Starts off with crispy gated drums, then a fat bassline comes in. The pads are really awesome, kind of sound sci-fi-ey. He did a good job of sound choice, not quite as annoying and Hello Everything in that respect. I can see the parallel's between this and startime2, but star time 2 seems to have a chorus, which this song doesn't. Its a little bit repetitive, but I guess that is what he is going for. It has a kind of sweet ending, almost like a lullaby, perhaps it was a lullaby the entire time and I didn't notice?

5. Nice! Signature venus no. 1 era SP drum breaks! This is the longest song on this EP, although that doesn't say much. He mixes a distorted 909(?) line with some drum n bass breaks for a while, then some ravy stabs come in. I'm already almost tired of this EP. The ending of this song was lame

6. Illegal dustbin is very slow-paced, and very disorted breaks. The bassline is weird. Kind of a cool song so far, there is some really sick stuff going on. Distorted vocal samples "ARE YOU DOWN WITH THE UNDERGROUND", "HOTTEST MUSIC ON THE MOTHERFUCKIN PLANET!". I actually like this song a lot, I think it might be my favorite. But its still only 4 minutes long(like every other song). The ending is pretty damn sick, so yeah, if you had to pick one song and run, this is what I'd go with, its almost a little bit like breakcore mixed with hardcore rave music.

Overall I'm not sure what to think, its okay. Nothing amazing, others might think differently. The songs are too short to DJ, and a little bit too weird. Cool sounds I guess, but kind of forgettable, but a fun listen for sure.

no idea if amazon were allowed to do this or not. it's not on bleep yet (though i do remember bleep selling the quaristice stuff online well before the cd came out).

also dont know why amazon only sell to stinky americans. i chekced their mp3 page and it said they dont have any DRM, which i was a little sus about, but doesnt matter now :P
