A few films recently watched.

saw this round a friend's last night confessions.

despite it's macabre theme and it leaving me a little forlorn afterwards, it's a very good film.

edit: light hearted pick-me-up this was not... fuuuuu cooper!

i hated adaptation. i found the entire autoreferentiality theme painfully useless, pointless and even insulting to an intelligent viewer. i'm sure everybody on here wrote an essay at some point in grade school, about having difficulties writing that essay. well, i got over it then. apart from that there wasn't much else about the movie. at least not for me. or maybe i just see through it all, seeing it as excuses to make a movie about itself. if somebody would care to share their thoughts on why they liked it, i'd maybe give it another chance.

i couldn't even get past the 50% mark on Midnight Run. Didn't find it engaging in the least, but i'll say one good thing about it it was at least partially watchable unlike Scent of a Woman

tried to start watching JFK, but I cant fucking stand Kevin Costner. He has to be the most boring, stiff actor I have ever, ever seen....im talking far far worse than Keanu.

Rubber - Second viewing and I'll give it an 8/10. Similar disappointments as before. It's over before you know it short. I'm wondering if ideas/scenes were cut due to its budget. I like the intro, and it's just picking at things, but half the examples of "no reason" just seemed wrong. Music was alright, the scene with the tire looking at its reflection is a good use of it, I thought. I had a quick look and laugh at the imdb message board and I wonder how this film was sold. Were people expecting a classic slasher/horror film? I haven't checked out the US trailer. There's gore but there's no tension, no scares. There is a good deal of dry, funny dialogue though, and the cast is pretty good too. I believe that his previous film "Steak" did badly as it was sold as a fairly typical comedy. The final scene...

Sideways - Enjoyed this a lot more when I first watched it years ago, still 7/10.

Adaptation - Also saw this recently for the first time so I felt I should chime in and say I thought it was very good. I've still got to see most of the Cage films mentioned in the last few pages, and for Kaufman: Synecdoche, I kept nodding off. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind I still have to see.

Two in the Wave - I've never really read up that much on Godard or Truffaut or their relationship, still I felt this docu was pretty lacking. There are some interesting clips of interviews, archival footage etc which make this worth a download though. There are probably better films, or perhaps I'll have to do something wild like read a book.

Started off thinking it was gonna be massacre after massacre(54 schoolgirls jump in front of a train in the first scene), but as it progresses it divulges into wtf then just plain ok i forgot this is japaneselol. After watching it though, really wraps(almost typed wrapes) your head around your own life, and I must say I enjoy movies that can make me look back positively on my life. I give it a thorough

Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence 'the sea' refers to a large armchair and 'zombies' are little yellow flowers. Having invented a brother whom they claim to have ostracized for his disobedience, the über-controlling parents terrorize their offspring into submission. The father is the only family member who can leave the manicured lawns of their self-inflicted exile, earning their keep by managing a nearby factory, while the only outsider allowed on the premises is his colleague Christina, who is paid to relieve the son of his male urges. Tired of these dutiful acts of carnality, Christina disturbs the domestic balance.

entertaining movie despite costner. pure delusional fantasy, but we're talking about oliver stone here.

not quite, Fletcher Prowdy aka Mr. X is a real person and still to this day proclaims most of the things his Donald Sutherland version says in the movie. There are some things in the movie blatantly not true but a good portion of it is.

if you like JFK you absolutely must see the directors cut, tons of new stuff added in and the movie Nixon, Stone's spiritual sequel to JFK. Nixon is a very underrated movie in my mind, probably my favorite Stone movie besides Platoon and JFK

i loved Rubber but i felt it went a tad overboard on the whole Gary Shandling Show breaking the third wall style. Pretty awesome movie, very impressed with all the practical and cleverly used digital effects too. How did they get the tire to move on its own and look so perfect?

i think i like Steak a little better as a movie, i felt if Rubber was a 45 minute film it could have been much stronger, although certain parts of it i admit are phenomenal.

have any of you seen Mr Oizo's first full length film Pre-Steak? i forgot the title but the entire thing is on google video, reminds me a lot of parts of Rubber

A young actor suddenly wakes up in the middle of the shooting of a movie he doesn't understand. After shooting a few scenes, the main character accidentally shoots and kills the technical crew. Despite this accident, the survivors decide to continue to shoot the movie, without a script and without a camera. But the lack of script will quickly lead them to a disaster.

Non-film is on karagarga too, same as the one that was on Google video. Hardcoded German subs and pretty poor quality.

Yeah there is a sort of rerelease. Unfortunately it's just going to be a bonus dvd with the limited ed. Rubber blu-ray from the French distributor. Perhaps it'll show up online, not sure if they'd bother subtitling it but I hope so.

I think there were a few tires. One remote control one that worked something like a hamster in a ball, then cut and you've got a shot with a regular tire that's just been nudged or turned by a hand off camera.

Wacko Jacko. Watch it again in a month or two. Grab The Osterman Weekend too. I just did a search and the only mention of that film in this thread seems to be by me in '09. Still haven't checked any more Peckinpah.
