catching up on unseen coen. very good. jennifer leigh was really good, despite an accent that other people seem to hate, her speed and delivery were spot on. as was tim robbins.

I was not a huge fan of the first one either, but I liked the diy bare-bones approach. Funny thing is I didn't even realize 2 was a prequel until I read some online reviews after the fact. That either shows how bad my memory is, or that they didn't do a very good job at establishing the sequence of events (though they do say 2006 everywhere, prob is I didn't remember the dates of the first one). I think I would have had to be more of a fanboy to put the pieces together.

Anyway the approach is similar to the first one, very slow burn, probably too slow at the start, then things ramp up steadily and the suspense builds. However it just ends abruptly right at the point where I felt it was heading into the climactic stretch. I guess it really depends how much a fan of that kind of movie you are. I probably would have given the first one a 7.5/10 or so, if it's any help.

the curse continues: The actress who played the older sister was murdered by her boyfriend after the first movie was done. The actor who played Henry Kane in 2 died during filming. And Heather O'Rourke died right after filming was completed on 3 as far as I know, but you can supposedly see how she had a swollen face in some scenes.

Just re-re-re-re-rewatched Bruce Dickinson's horror film, THE CHEMICAL WEDDING. Yes, that's Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden.

The film is nowhere near as coherent or well-constructed as the trailer suggests (which is saying something). I've never seen so many plot holes, inconsistencies and all-round weirdy bits in a film. It's also camp as hell.

The commentary is a must, too - Brucie and director Julian Doyle are surprisingly frank about all the ways in which they fucked the movie up. It's a great laugh and they both come across as awesome guys.

Primal Fear - man I forgot how much I love this film. I don't think there has ever been a more impressive debut by an actor than Ed Norton here - he should have got the oscar. And Richard Gere is surprisingly great too. 10/10

toy story 3

Animal Kingdom. 7/10.

Australian crime drama about a 17 year old dude who's mom OD's so he ends up living with this rag-tag gang of sketchy armed robbers and drug dealers. The "bad guy" was really creepy and effective and the desperation of main character's situation was made crystal clear. The lead actor seemed mildly retarded, but I'll let it slide. Definitely solid, probably wouldn't watch it again, though.

A Serious Man. 9/10.

Haven't seen True Grit, but I thought ASM was the best of the last few Coen Bros flicks.

Hm, I thought animal kingdom was fantastic, and was one of the few films I've seen recently that I had an almost immediate desire to rewatch...

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - 8.5/10

Ethan Hawke was phenomenal wow. Really enjoyed it.

it surpassed my expectations actually. i had one of the big theatre screens at my local complex, and the whole room to myself. sat in the very center, lol'd and made loud exclamations the entire way through. i wish it could always be that way

An employee at the cinema was hiding behind the doors to the theatre dressed as Ghostface and everytime someone entered the theatre he would jump out and scare the living shit out of them. It was great.

I just saw The Reader. I was expecting shit but was pleasantly surprised. Not a great film, but a good exploration of both the "banality of evil" and how people deal with responsibility. Mainly let down by some mediocre acting. Winslet, Feinnes, and the kid playing the young Feinnes were all just so-so I thought. 8.5/10.
