i'd like to hear rdj tackle a "new" sound that "the kids" are into a la vibert and mu ziq, but his dj sets would seem to indicate that he doesnt really listen to dubstep, grime, funky, tropical etc. just old shit and new shit that sounds like old shit (eg tipper)

wtf ... I think what makes richard so great is he doesn't ever sound like "the kids"

um. are you saying he's never worked in a "hip" sound? (HAB cough cough)

or that his interpretation of hip sounds would sound different to the "street" version? (like Vibert's take on dubstep)

his music usually sounds pretty fresh.. at least everything he releases under aphex twin... going with whats currently trendy is not what I want him to do... maybe it would be a great way to showcase his skills or something by beating everyone at their own game... but I'd rather he just stay true to his own style/music

i got to admit that the tracks from those youtubes of his warehouse performance tickled me fancy and i would surely get the album if it was something like that.

here here.. I would actually love a very varied album... something that touches all sorts of styles/genres both explored and unexplored... something maybe akin to shimmering hour.

I wish he made a Steve Reich/Phillip Glass kinda music once. Maybe when he's older...

Thanks dude, I totally needed that right now

I haven't followed this thread too closely for a while. Does anyone else suspect a collaborative work with Hecker?

It seems like they've been playing together a bit. Thoughts?

I don't think so because I think Hecker is more of a tool Richard is using to add an element to his DJing... It's more about the technical impossibility of achieving the sound Richard wants if it was just him on stage.

What does Hecker do when they perform together? Does he contribute material?

He adds sound effects and stuff... I haven't seen them perform yet though so it'd be better if someone else answered your questions.

The concert I was at, Hecker was mainly heard in the back of the hall playing his noise experiments (some that are released), while Aphex was playing a regular DJ set as always that you could hear best in the front of the hall. I stood in the middle so I could hear the combination and it worked pretty good (har har), gave a really weird vibe to it, like there was a war in the back and a rave in the front or something.

You can already hear Aphex experimenting with this in the snowbombing set (2005) when he plays some acid together with a Hecker track from "Recordings For Rephlex". Also, almost nobody knew Hecker before and this is a pretty good promotion for him (being on the top of the bill) so I guess it's a promotion thing also (just like the useage of the Tahnaiya Russel nickname for that remix).

i didn't like the aphex/hecker collaborations - didn't think it added anything. i like hecker, but would have preferred to just listen to him on his own. obviously, the same goes for aphex.

I keep reading this and I don't get it. hip? HAB is fucking weird as hell.

i think he means since it was full of jungle esque snare rushes , but i would disagree that HAB is some sort of exception where RDJ latched onto a hip electronic music trend and put his own awesome twist on it.

so... back to this "tropical" music i keep hearing about.....

is that like calypso or soca or something?

But that's what he's always done under that name

"Aphex Twin" records are almost always at least in part, RDJ's take on what the current sounds are, going right back to the start

R&S/Classics era is his take on rave and hardcore techno music

Ambient Works - ambient techno scene, The Orb, B12

I Care - Portishead, Massive Attack, Mowax, Downtempo Hip-Hop etc.

RDJAlbum - Jungle

Come To Daddy is a direct pisstake of Prodigy, Windowlicker of Timbaland and Neptunes

Drukqs is his response to breakcore, planet mu, vsnares and complex computerbods like autechre etc

Caustic/Polygon/Tuss/Universal Indicator/Brad Strider & most AFX are i'd say his more personal records, or at least have more classic influences and are less trendy

So it wouldn't surprise me if the next album is something contemporary, bass music or something. Or maybe the current dance/electronic scene is total shit and not worth taking as a starting point, who knows. As long as it isn't fucking spastic comedy music like drukqs/rdj/ctd/hab (as much as i love it) because that would be going in circles and we've had enough of that

Or just maybe we're barking up the wrong tree and the new Aphex album will be more smooth analogue jams in the lineage of analord and tuss, i certainly wouldn't complain
