Also, LOL at listening to autechre on an ipod.

Incunabula and Amber, not so bad. Anything else beyond those two is terrible.

Autechre on the go? No thanks.

oh shit i better delete all the recent autechre from my ipod, despite it being some of my favourite stuff to listen to while on the train.

yeah amber is decent. it's got a nice atmosphere. one of a kind. does the ambient works 85-92 sound best if you know what i'm saying here.

What's wrong with AE on the go? I too love listening to Autechre on the train. I think it's ideal headphone music.

There is not alot of music by Ae that I could call bad. If you think its bad you probably just have not worked hard enough at it yet. Autechre is not an easy listening experience, it is a challenge, but ultimately more rewarding than any other music type or artist IMO.

I would advise that anybody who hates latter period ae should just slowly work their way up the discography because each album leads to the next and its a pretty seamless transition if your really getting into the albums one at a time.

Not trying to shamelessly promote autechre here, I'm just saying it is a shame to see some potential serious ae fans turned off by the challange of their latter period work when they could have eventually seen what the autechre vibe is really all about.

EP7 still rubs me in a weird way. oF course, weird is good a lot of the time, but it seems less tight and harder to grasp (except for that one track that's super tight.. . but even that's like.. too tight)

but, the fact they took a rhythm from the SK-1 and managed to develop an awesome track out of it saves it.

Netlon Sentinel?

Left Blank.. but it is what it is so i can't be too harsh.

Confield (somewhat)

Untilted (almost completely)

someone mentioned Minidisc - I recently got a hold of a used MD player and busted that out again and it was really fun to listen to. a whole bunch of their releases (Chiastic Slide, Draft, Cichlisuite, LP5) texturally make a lot more sense next to Minidisc. plus there's a shit ton of samples from other Ae/Gescom releases in there.

if you don't "get" a song like pro radii you're simply not listening loud enough. i don't understand why half of Ae fans hate untilted. the first 3 tracks alone would have been their best EP if released as such. i like augmatic disport too, so i'm tempted to say first 4 but i've never gotten a music boner quite like the one when i really listened to untilted the first time up through pro radii.

sublimit is fucking delicious too, but it took a while for me to warm up to that track for some reason.

I've never disliked untilted but lately I've really come around to it, so many moments of percussive brilliance throughout. The part from the 05 glasgow set when the pro radii drums come in is one of my favorite autechre moments evar - every time I hear that mangled vocal sample "break" I'm obliged to reply "fuck yes!"

And sublimit is awesome as well, especially the end.

Couldn't agree more. Those songs are godlike. And I will say it:

The Untilted first four is the best four track streak of any Autechre album.

I like the first half of the album but Ipacial just destroys the flow for me, can't get into that track at all. Now Sublimit, THERE'S a track...

ipacial has some pretty sporadic syncopation, it's kind of rough to get a good feel. when i saw ae live, a lot of times that there was a part with terribly fast percussion, sean would twitch his head pretty much exactly on tempo. he looked like a rave kid, but sometimes thats the only way to dance to ae. there's a lot of ipacial that i could see him doing that head twitchy thing to

It's more the timbre that does my head in, I hate that high pitched percussive noise that dominates the first half of the track. Same problem I have with Reniform Puls, a certain type of high pitched noise can instantly give me a headache. I'll admit the last few minutes of Ipacial are pretty cool once that element is removed and they add that rubbery synth.

I didn't hate Untilted and in fact I liked quite a bit of it. Also that tour was the only time I've seen Autechre live so those memories change the listening experience a bit.

I say I don't "get" it because it's such a huge departure in attitude and aesthetics from the rest of their catalog that I have putting it in context, which I feel is an essential part of enjoying stuff like Autechre. It's got almost none of that rich, dark complexity that started building steam in Confield and sprawled out in Draft, and came back pretty strong in Quaristice. I guess now that I think about it Quaristice has some of the aesthetics of Untilted - it's sort of between that and Draft... or whatever the next step is (duh).

If Confield and Draft sound like wilderness, and Quaristice sounds like a city, Untilted sounds like the city but with primary colors and geometric shapes. A playground city.

In other news, I have recently stopped enjoying Amber for some reason

That tends to happen to me with Amber more than any other album of theirs. Periods of time where I just can't get into it at all.

The cure is usually a late night with headphones + Foil. Then the rest of the tracks come back from there

or piezo. that's a great flagship amber track for me.

i probably listen to that album about 1/10 as much as their later catalog. i see the whole album as one track with 1 mood, but i just don't really care for it as much. they make a nice atmosphere, but its not enough to hold my attention most times
