my theory is that Warp is trying very hard to co-opt the growing wonky scene. people on the periphery of paying attention to new dance music genres (like myself) will be under the impression that Warp is the main driving force behind the genre. In a similar way to how Hyperdub records basically owns the dubstep scene, except what warp has accomplished is more in line with MU's dubstep line .

I'm sure the heads at warp genuinely love Flying Lotus and Hudson Mowhake, they both make interesting and good music but i can't help but think Warp is trying very hard to plug themselves back into the dancefloor electronic scene which they have been out of so long

You are dead on, Steve Beckett said this in 2007:

Steve Beckett: »He's got an EP and an album hopefully (laughs / applause). We've also signed an act who did the Red Bull Music Academy last year called Flying Lotus (applause).«

RBMA: »Now one of the tracks on the EP actually features a vocalist who was part of the Music Academy in Melbourne and I believe that track was actually recorded at the Academy.«

Steve Beckett: »You're not charging us anything for that, are you? And we're talking to another guy, Hudson Mohawke. Hopefully we can get something penned this week (applause). So yeah, there's some good stuff coming out of here as far as we're concerned.«

RBMA: »From the area of hip hop-tempo music via the electronic side, you've put out stuff from Anti-Pop Consortium, Prefuse 73 and now Flying Lotus.«

Steve Beckett: »And now Harmonic 33

RBMA: »You seem to be supporting that side as well which is really positive.«

Steve Beckett: »It's not about supporting it, I just love that sort of music. When we started the shop all we were selling before the house really took off was hip hop, so I feel like it's really in my blood. The artists, too, someone like Autechre, even though people who hear them would imagine them as just being anal electronic kids, they're b-boys. They were tagging when they were fucking 11-years old 'round Manchester. They totally know their hip hop and that thunk of hip hop is underlying a lot of their beats, that fusion of musique concrete and really experimental music. That's what I like about bands like that, bringing it into the present day with Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, Harmonic 33 and Hudson Mohawke. It's just got that thunk in the music and that rawness and I love being able to bring that into electronic music. A lot of the electronic music I don't like is just too timid, not really taking its own space.«

woah thanks for actually reading what i said. its not often around this forum that me ranting about my music scene conspiracy theories gets serious attention. I

I don't even really see it being a conspiracy? I mean it seems pretty open that's one of the things they want to do with warp.

Though with things like Grizzly Bear etc. there's more going on than just Dancey music.

thats true , but i think Warp very much wants to be part of the bottom up process of the music scene again. Not that artists like Autechre and Squarepusher aren't still innovative as hell, they are and many people will be influenced by JAS and Quaristice from this point forward BUT it's not really the same as filling up dance floors everywhere with bleep house or having DJs playing out Warp tracks all over the place not just at their own parties.

Guest moo duck

i liked this guy's stuff (basically straight drummer's cut-ups) when he began to caught attention, but then he start to construct artistic things within his deconstructional methods like that was the way to a certain dialect and i fucking fuck-closed this fucker from my expert mind. sampler of new LP is just fucking nothing, pity of an attempt. by the way, fuck him.

on a positive note, have a listen to russian diy hip-hop.

i haven't heard of hudson mohawke until last night when i went to the warp site (which i do like every 3 to 4 months). i heard some of his tracks and i like what i've heard... i wasn't blown away by it, but that's not what i'm looking for anymore... the blowing away happened a long time ago, and i don't think that will ever happen again!

but hudson mohawke is alright with me!

hm probably long after the 60s and 70s stop being fashionable, by that time the 90s will be fashionable

what album is "root hands" on... i like that track!

Its on a 7" he made for all city records... It's his best solo work in a long time in my opinion (since "Hudson's Heeters Vol 1" I'd say). Less "glittery" and more "experimental" in a good way than his warp releases. "Star Crackout" and "Everyone Else Is Wrong" are on it too and they're pretty good tracks I think.

Then what he's doing with warp is a bit boring...Always sounds like cleaner and more pompous versions of his early ideas...

Mike Slott is the true genius out of Heralds Of Change, no doubt... Always progressive

for the past few years, i've been ignoring all the new acts on warp due to my stubborness and not wanting indie music mixed into the warp roster (i like some indie bands but i didn't like the idea of them mixed into the same lineup as autechre and aphex). well, this weekend i gave all the newer artists listens and i am basically kicking myself for being closed minded towards warp. i don't like most of the indie stuff (gravenhurst and maximo park) but i enjoyed grizzly bear... and i finally got around to checking out flying lotus and hudson mohawke and i totally like what i hear from those guys (flying lotus more so)... didn't like gang gang dance at all though! i need to snap out of the stubborness and check out some more from other places that i've rejected!
