Reformed Faction - I am the source of light i am not a mirror

I saw your post last week and decided I should check this out, being a Spybey fan but having never listened to this or zoviet france. I really like it so far (have played disc 1 and 2). I don't listen to much ambient and luckily a lot of it is interesting and even sometimes upbeat enough that it doesn't bore me. Good stuff. Might need to order the box.

it's definitely an interesting place to start off for Zoviet France, the team of reformed faction considers this a 'pop album' compared to their previous works. If you want to check out something more representative of what ZF is famous for check out the 1987 release 'Loh Land' , that album in particular has elements that later appeared in the early download work like Furnance.

Cool, I will check out that ZF album. But it's likely I won't enjoy too much else in the back catalog, since I'm rarely in the mood for ambient and noise. I have several DVOA albums but only listen to them on occasion. Even if I like experimental music and weird noises, above all I like my melodies. Preferably twisted. But thanks for pointing out Loh Land because I'm at least interested and was overwhelmed yesterday looking at their discography.

yeah Dead voices on air is very much a similar sound to very late period Zoviet France (shadow thief of the sun). Actually really only the first 3 DVOA cds. Loh Land is actually quite a rythmic and melodic album that i wouldn't classify as ambient, just really fucking original and and ahead of its time. It's experimental for sure but not hard to listen to like the artists ZF is always compared to from the same time (Nurse with wound, hafler trio) I purchased Loh Land right after i got Downlaod's Furnace because i learned who Mark Spyby was from that LP, etc and i was quite blown away. and keep in mind i didnt listen to any ambient and noise during that time.

It's a good place to start, as is No Heroes, or You Fail Me. Jane Doe's hailed as a classic, and it's great too but not a personal favorite of mine. It's a lot more raw and nasty sounding, and about as heavy as anything can get without being unlistenable. Basically I'm of the opinion that they keep improving with each release. Axe to Fall is probably their most versatile album, showcasing pretty much everything they do well. So maybe it would be the best place to start.

I'd say Jane Doe was the best, but start with some of the newer stuff, or not... You can't go wrong really.

First record of theirs I got was You Fail Me and took it from there, it's a pretty good introduction to the band, Axe To Fall really is incredible though.

Jane Doe is one of those records you kinda have to listen to in it's entirety to 'get', you couldn't ask for a more complete record.

I can't remember if I posted in this thread already and can't be arsed to check, but...

Prefuse 73 (Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian)

Bibio (both albums)

Shitmat (One Foot In The Rave)

Broadcast and The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of The Radio Age

Roj (The Transactional Dharma of Roj)

Tim Exile (Listening Tree)

FaltyDL (Bravery)

Clark (Totems Flare)

Super Furry Animals (Dark Days/Light Years)

Tortoise (Beacons of Ancestorship)

Belbury Poly (From An Ancient Star)

Atlas Sound (Logos)

St. Vincent (Actor)

Tune-Yards (Bird-Brains)

For me there's been a whole cuntload of ace albums out this year. I probably overlooked a few I've bought too.

Converge - Axe to Fall

It's been a good year for metal.

Care to name some decent metal releases for this year? I kinda shot my wad with Mastodon and everything else I've heard has left me empty. Been meaning to check out new Converge though.

I guess it's more been a good year for me hearing good metal that I hadn't already heard, rather than their being a hell of a lot of great releases this year. Mastodon and Converge both released top notch work, and Slayer released perhaps their best effort since Reign in Blood. Of course no one that wasn't already a fan of Slayer is going to care about that. I went on a big Slayer kick earlier this year, and now its been reawakened by the new release. I also just discovered Cephalic Carnage, so that's been defining this year's metal for me, even though it's mostly stuff they did earlier this decade. I'm just catching up.

If you combined all last year's best metal releases with this year, then you'd have a pretty great year for metal.

I was really anticipating this one and I like it, but for some reason I've only listened to it about 3 times. I guess I'm just rarely in the mood for that type of music while I'm at work, where I do most of my listening. Guess I'll do something about that soon.
