Seriously, though, the album does work best as a whole/Gesamtkunstwerk. krYlon might actually be an indicator of that as its function really does seem to be one of recapitulation.

yeah, in a similar sense i really quite like Xektses sql as an appendix. it may not seem that "developed" as the other tracks, but after the total destruction that is Yuop, how could anything bloom fully? last throes on the ashes.

on topic: atm probably O=0 and Yuop, cos i'm such an emo cunt.

This exactly. For me, probably between see on see and pt2ph8 for the top spot.

hehehehehe. get it? get it?

too soon for me to pick a favorite really though. there are some more immediate attention-getters of course...Treale, d-sho qub, ilanders, Yuop. i quite like qplay and O=0 though, if i had to pick inital faves.

To quote my post in the megathread a while back:

Os Veix3 is among my top 3, if not my favorite track. It's like walking across the surface of Mars, surrounded by rocks, spikes, and gaseous mini geysers, bouncing and erupting all around you like waveforms in rhythm with your step. Desolate and solitary, but not depressing. Wish it would go on longer.

Now that I have high quality, I am certain this is my favorite on the album at this point in time. It inspires the most visuals, which for me always makes a track stand out far beyond the rest.

i must say i pretty much like em all equally (krYlon doesn't grab me too hard, though) though i've certainly played known(1) the most.. just more for the mood i'm in right now i guess. they're all pretty equally spectacular, but see on see and d-sho-qub are pretty high up too.

I mostly agree with this

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

I was in US tjis summer, and eat in KFC. FUCK That's the worst thing i've ever eaten. The flesh simply doesn't cleave to the bones. Battery ferming. And then, foie gras is banned from NY state, because it's considered as ill-treat. IT'S NOT. KFC is tourist ill-treat. YOU POISONERS! Two hours after being to KFC, i stopped in a amsih little town barf all that KFC shit out. Nice work!

So i hope this woman is not like kfc chicken, otherwise she'll be pulled to pieces.

i still can't help but feel alittle disappointed

by this album.

as i said before, listening to it just reminds me of

how wonderful some of their previous albums have been.

there are definitely some highlights and splendid moments,

but i must say i am left a bit limp.

maybe i will continue to grow to like it more?

it doesn't entirely feel as though that is going to happen, but...things change.

Yes. Oversteps is enjoyable, but when you go back and listen to any post Tri Repetae album after having indulged in Oversteps for a while, you realize how much more they have to them. Even Quaristice, which I'm not mad keen on as far as Ae albums go, seems to have a lot more going on track by track. I don't just mean layers and programming wizardry here: I also mean general inventiveness, polish, buried sonic nuggets, attention to detail, etc. But the guys are older now, there's the baby, blah blah. I suppose it's to be expected - I'm just surprised at how some people are drooling over it. Good for them, though! I wish I could do that... I mean I did spend a fair bit of money on the release and a gig ticket, so I really WANT to love it.

lol.

You know why this album kicks ass Lianne? Because for once there isn't a single track that deteriorates into chaos over time, as has appeared on EVERY SINGLE FUCKING AE ALBUM SINCE LP5 (I think). There also isn't a single track that ACCELERATES INTO INFINITY AT THE END, which has also happened far too often after LP5. It feels to me like they are breaking patterns and that can only be a good thing. I swear on Quaristice when Simmmm started falling apart halfway through I yawned and thought "oh, it's another fall-aparty track, well at least the start was nice."

I think my enjoyment of Oversteps stems as much from the sense of freshness as it does from the music itself. It doesn't really seem like it's trying to prove anything, it just grooves along. Also I think it's a case of the sum being more than the parts; the overall mood the album evokes is pretty unique I think.

Actually, this is a very good point. You have made me re-think things a little. A part of me was hoping for more weird Simmm-like breakdowns, but it is true that to do that again on yet another album would have been too predictable (even if at one time it sounded attractively un-predictable.)

i don't understand how you can not love the simmm breakdown

It is amazing, isn't it? And it doesn't just end with it. What's wonderful about the track is that beauty is restored again in the last section - with those rhythmic, alien chimes, that thudding kick drum and those dark sci-fi chords. That track is a three-sectioned work of musical gold.

I'd love a whole album of Simmm-like experiments. I know Oversteps has synth patches that are very similar to the sounds on Simmm (like Known 1), but their application is very different.

definitely. ae are masters of turning a song into a totally different feel, see surripere, latent quarter, simmm, etc. i don't get too much of that in this album, but i'm starting to pay closer attention to the more subtle chord changes...

Oversteps is as close as you get to an Autechre pop album. They actually have set melodic instruments that play all the way through the tracks, and some of the tracks even have a verse and chorus

I still like it, but I can see myself suddenly getting really sick of it at some point.

Im sure Autechre will surprise yet again with their next release though and I certainly wish theyll go back to doing sound sculpturish music like Confield and Gantz.
