Best track on Oversteps?

My favorite track is still pt2ph8.

Then os veix3, st epreo, Yuop and qplay. Not too keen on the aggressive tracks like Ilanders and d-sho dub. Find them a bit cold and "pointless". Would prefer Ilanders if it had a warmer mix like Quaristice. Right now it sorta just sits on top of the surface and has the same sound-scape going through the entire track.

I will always prefer the more moody, subtle Autechre like the amazing Subrange tracks  .

Best tracks so far for me are _ r ess _ see on see _ os veix3 _ d sho qub _ st epro _ yuop

Still working on ilanders and treale

Not sure about pt2ph8 _ qplay _ O=0 _ redfall and krylon - they seem to be getting skipped a lot in favour of the above at the moment

known(1) is totally wasted on me - might even delete from the album file :trashbear:

Is that a Mac volume change sound that comes in quietly (alongside the main beat) at around 3:45 on r ess?

i genuinely can't pick one favorite track. they're all unique and wonderful. see on see though... that one kind of stands out to me at the moment. but not enough to be considered a favorite.

I thought exactly the same thing! The little popping sound; very familiar...

So now ilanders and Treale are my current favourites, they're both just incredibly beautiful sounding, especially the last couple minutes of Treale... Holy shit

o=o and redfall are my favorites so far. Is it me, or does d-sho qub sound like Ae remixing Chris Clark?

I'm enjoying this as a whole, and I like it far better anything they've done since Draft 7.30.

The song "Hot Shot City" is particularly good.

You're the guy who used to write all those Autechre album reviews on your blog, right? I loved reading your stuff when I was first getting into Autechre, helped me to spot some of the nuances I would have otherwise missed. So it may be a few years late, but thanks.

Guilty as charged. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

'redfall' makes me angry. It promises to be one of the best tracks, but then ends up going nowhere. It has some funny distorted synth blast thing which feels like it has nothing to do with the rest of the track, though. Ha ha.

to me that track is all about the 'dialogue' between these two elements. Its quite beautiful when you just let it happen and listen to the interplay of the sounds (the more random synth chime melody and the whoooshing metallic sound)

standouts for me thus far have been Os Viex3, st epreo & Youp!

Yay! I'm enjoying this album a lot :) doesn't top Draft for me though... nothing does...

+1

Repeated listening has shown that 'pt2ph8' is still the bomb

No, I don't see anyone in Electronica ever beating Draft, but I would be glad for someone to prove me wrong!

Funny how reviewers generally were quite rough towards to Draft 7.30 calling it uninspired and lacking innovation, or even stranger - saying Autechre were back to easy listening.

Just read the Pitchfork review of Draft 7.30, its like they listened to a different album.

I think all the albums since Draft 7.30 have generally made the previous seem a little better. I was slightly disappointed in Draft when I first got it, but it was really when Untilted came out that I properly appreciated Draft's crazy attention to detail, its imagination... its atmosphere. Untilted initially seemed too dry and compressed, or something, but once I had listened to Quaristice a few times and gone back to Untilted, I loved its longer, more developed tracks and the extra dimension it seemed to have in comparison to Quaristice - which felt a little lacking in some way.

Now that I've been listening to Oversteps, Quaristice seems much better than I remembered it being. I had got used to Oversteps's level of layering and detail, which while not being insufficient for its own sound, does pale in comparison to much of Quaristice imho. Does this mean the albums have got steadily worse for me, or is it just the way we tend to react to new releases? I'm not sure - because I generally still find Draft 7.30 to be the most incredible listen, followed by Untilted and then Quaristice - and then Oversteps, which I've already grown a little tired of, far sooner than any other post Tri Repetae album. But luckily all of these albums are great, so it's not like they've sunk to a low or anything. They're still above much of what else is going on - I just hope the next Autechre really blows me away. I'm up for the challenge.

Nah, I reckon it's like ae acknowledge often - it takes a good portion of their audience at least the two years between albums to really "get" the prior release.

I know what you mean about Untilted seeming too dry, when I first heard it I was like huh?!?!? Draft was so lush and psychedelic... But then you start to notice the washes of ambience placed very low in the mix, and then you follow the tracks through with a good amount of attention and hear how psychedelic and liquid they get in their second halves and then... yeah it took me a while but I grew to adore Untilted.

Quaristice, however, I loved from the get-go and still love to bits now. I really don't understand the hating on that one, to me it seems like gold medal styles all the way. Can't please everyone huh

Actually, it's been bothering me for the last two days, since I knew I recognized the "distorted" part. This afternoon, it came to me. "Sky Saw" by Eno, off Another Green World.

It may not be a direct sample. Heck, it might not be intentional, but it's very, very close.

You're probably right. I think Oversteps is probably more mood-dependent than any other Autechre album, though - perhaps because it is more blatantly 'emotional'. I put it on this morning and I was blown away by it. I thought it was amazing. But other times it's come across as dull and irritating. It's definitely a good album... My favorite track is currently qplay, though the whole stretch from r ess to os veix3 is pretty awesome. It's great when an album has a streak of 8 wins (yep, even known(1) has stop annoying me as much as it used to!)

ilanders, known(1), qplay and Treale, as well as d-sho qub would probably be my picks

If I really had to pick one it would probably be Treale though.

Seriously, compared to all other Ae albums except maybe Draft, I have to listen to this one from start to finish. I can not begin to conceive of isolating this album into 14 (or 15 with Xektses sql) parts. It is to me their best since Untilted, maybe even best since Draft. The whole thing stands as a mammoth of autechrian proportions.
