Classic example of this situation and a American phrase I love.

I was cycling through Windsor one sunny day which gets a lot of tourists (summat to do with a castle and queen, of which I take no notice at all LoL) and there's this dude..er sorry chap with big thick bouncy blonde hair, sunglasses and a Fu Manchu (Calfornian stoner rock band) t-shirt on. Although at the time I didn't realise it, he must of been some USA west-coast/surfer/skater dude, cause as I go past him. I say something like 'Ah my good friend, Fu Manch what a fantastic band'. He just sort of starts swaying around like a monkey, does some sort of kung-fu shit pose while doing the 2 horned metal finger thing and just yells at me

ill. 1.) "i COULD care less". (us)

meaning: it is possible for me to care less. ie i care, even a small amount.

ill 2.) "i COULDN'T care less" (uk)

meaning : it is impossible for me to care any less because i just couldn't give a rat's fanny.

from where i stand, number one doesn't make much sense in the context it's normally used...UNLESS...

you say " i could care less, but it would be really difficult."... ie it would be an undertaking to care less because i care such an infinitessimal amount.

well that was my point "I could care less" would be used in a situation where you aren't really occupied with the matter, whereas "couldn't care less" means you dont give a shit about any of it.

Agreed. I love the US office, but it is drastically different in humor and character from the British version....but then again....a generic name like "The Office" is pretty much satisfactory, combined with the fact that Gervais was very involved with the first season of the US version...at least to my knowledge.
