what percentage of shows are there going to be featuring one of these in the next year? 80%?

This does seem to mostly be an attempt to cash in on the whole "analog is cool" mindset that has crept out of the electronic music production community & into the general indie community. Still, best not to look a gift synth in the mouth.

Well, it excites me b/c even though I do love digital, I also love analog. And granted I would survive if there were no more "new" analogs coming out...It is a breath of fresh air that one of the "big" companies is actually making something analog for the first time in a ages. And it may just be a one off. But it could spell a possible future for fully featured synths, being produced by big companies. Which SHOULD mean they are not going to be at the boutique prices like most other modern analogs.

beats a radius II (or MS2000 III). both of those are good synths, but if you have one, you don't really need more under most circumstances. similarly -- does anyone really buy new kaoss pads every year?

the primary thing with the monotron: it isn't last year's synth run through the corporate photocopier

I'm probably just going to feed audio into it anyway, so the keyboard thing isn't much a problem.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Nice! Now i just need to learn basic electrical engineering :(

does anyone who understands this stuff well have any tips or advice for learning how to do this kind of mod, or sourcing parts?

can we get a little discussion on cheapo analog monosynths in here?

I'm thinking about the DSI Mopho or the Doepfer Dark Energy. Already read a little about them both in some other threads on the boards but this is the most recent and i'd rather not start a new one. Dark Energy looks way more fun to tweak but I've heard bad things about its bass. Something about it having a triangle-based VCO gives it weak low-end? True? Mopho is cheaper and I've heard it in person, and holy fuck do I like the sound. I guess i would just use it as a hybrid VST basically with some convenient knobs on the front for performance.

I'm thinking Mopho. Nice affordable analog bass, eh? Is there anything else out there that's similar that I should look at?

Oh yeah - the mopho keyboard version is the coolest little fucker. I just don't want to spend twice the cash.

personally i think the mopho sounds exactly the same as every other cheap synth on the market analogue or otherwise - it seems that DSI believed it must have "huge sound" and "massive bass" etc and because of this it is essentially just a box full of the same presets you get on an alesis micron, korg microkorg, roland sh-201 etc etc. i hate it's stupid name, i hate it's stupid colour scheme and i hate it's severe lack of on board controls. the mopho is mainly suited to creating the type of "techno" music favoured by our misguided new member "BassCreator". fuck the mopho.

on the other hand, the doepfer dark energy is a "proper" synthesizer with no presets and a host of hands on controls. it is about a gazillion times more versatile than a DSI mopho. it is semi modular and will integrate with all kinds of other gear whether it's MIDI enabled or not.

i would choose a dark energy over a mopho every time.

i also might start a personal campaign to ban any kind of preset sound being loaded onto anything.

haha. ouch. I don't want to make music like BassCreator. (he's from Massachusetts? way to represent...)

i like the doepfer but I need to hear more of it. most of the samples online are basic acid squelches and FX. They sound on the thin side. I mostly want a good analog bass synth, and I just don't know how full the bass is on the DE. anyone got a good demo of what kind of bass the doepfer can do?

it can do fucking awesome bass believe me - also you can route the CV outs into the LFO and things like that so you get tons of modulation possibilities.

i think this video review of it is really good, but you have to watch it in it's entirety - the track at the end is wicked too.
