xy_politics
Looks like I'll be buying some mu records for the first time soon. Guest Benedict Cumberbatch
i heard one track and i hate it. vocal samples need to be carressed not looped into insanity. i can't even comment on the music with that playing overtop this whole genre is dead to me. the wire gush over stuff i dont like all the time. i've just got used to it. imagine a music magazine that loved everything. delet...
On 5/28/2010 at 6:20 PM, Lube Saibot said: Wow... watmm points me to a new track by snares, i go onto planetmu.com to see if there's any info on some upcoming release, i notice this DJ Nate nonsense, and whaddya know, i come back to watmm and a thread on him is already in motion. Full fucking circle. Plus a thread on paramore chick's boobs, the oil spill, aliens in the same day... I'm only getting my information from here from now on. On to this DJ Nate... Thing is, Mike P has always been adept at finding budding talents, diamonds in the rough, just generally awesomeness in its infancy and introducing it to the world with great impact. I mean, Snares did get signed off Rossz Csillag or Cavalcade or Detrimentalist, he got signed off standard (or at least, standard to be) gabber+amen fare. Oblique and arresting as it was, it was still almost completely non-musical, had stale production (tits-up squarified distortion can only go so far), it was crackhead music by a (by his own testimony) crackhead. Sure enough, he soon churned out the masterpieces that he did (still pending acceptance from some of you as the case may be), and in that context I can now go back to the early wanks and thoroughly enjoy as the glimpses of a burgeoning genius that they are. Mike P had the reverse hindsight to make this happen, and Snares went on to single-handedly give breakcore (as a music and as a scene) a second wind (brief as it was), get a shitload of kids to download Renoise, and probably inured quite a few 4/4 burnouts to now crazy you can really get with electronics. Changing the game up quite a bit - check. That was the peak of Mike's scouting abilities, a victory he's come pretty near to duplicating with the relatively recent Slugabed and Rudi Zyglado signings. These guys are two sides of the same coin IMO, Mu's answer to Warp's FlyLo/HudMo breakout, but not a lagging answer, more a timely, constructive and contributive response. One of his mixes is also where I first found out about Loops Haunt, no doubt a refreshing take on already-stagnating wonky and dubstep. Make no mistake, Paradinas has got his hand firmly on every pulse there is. BUT, this DJ Nate thing shows a side of him going overboard a bit. I'm not even worried about the production and/or rawness of the thing, considering early Snares and Mike's statements that he always always fiddles himself with the mixing and mastering of his roster. I'm more worried about it being... i dunno... is (figuratively and literally) one-note near-outsider-level dilettantish fad music too harsh? I mean, i definitely see what's caught his eye, what revolution he thinks he's investing in: those rhythms are WELL fucking weird... at least to me, I've never heard ghettotech/miami bass/electro like this. But it's not much of a foundation for anything. Once the novelty wears off, it ain't got repeat value, and "hypnotic" can very easily turn into "annoying" or "just plain stupid". I think Mikey had an unfortunate visit from Uncle Superhipster. The baile funk comparison is quite spot on, Jonas... you can drop one of those tracks in virtually any set and it's a perfect transitioner, everybody smiles and dances on furiously as they're indulging in a fantasy of a rawer vibe... And Funk has got shit-tons of character and identity and "realness". But Warp didn't sign any of that shit, hipster- and indie-centric as they may be, because, well, you know... standards. Signings like this make me think Planet Mu is struggling, and i hate to think that. Finally, not to be ad hominem or anything, but also: Mr. DJ Nate, would you kindly inform us, edit: FUCK ME, reading the guardian article and "It sounds like the brooding urban soundtrack of Burial reimagined for a city with faster, meaner streets" is some of the biggest journo-porno crap I've ever read it my life. I mean, how fucking lazy can you get, is there like NO OTHER point of reference you can think of? Lazy cunts... Well put mate. these days i try and avoid saying anything negative on the net, instead veering quickly away from commenting in threads where things annoy me. But i have to chime in to agree with you on some of these points (which ones, i cannot say cause that might allow people to track down what i'm whinging about, heh) eneewae, bless. Mike P had the reverse hindsight to make this happen, hmm i was getting into your rant until you started talking about Vsnares. I have some personal attachment to this so forgive me if i come off a little brash. Have you heard the first proper Venetian Snares album off of Isolate Records? It's actually far more interesting than a lot of his later works (which at a certain point start to become predictable 200bpm amen break workouts). Wai of Isolate records was the one who found the 'diamond in the rough' not Mike P who simply threw large amounts of money at Wai and Aaron until he decided to defect off of Isolate records. Mike P is a very very good business man, but people far too often give him credit for plucking people out of 'obscurity'. From my perspective Vsnares got a big name for himself with the Print/f release, and if it wasn't for that Mike P would have to poach an artist from another label instead. And honestly let's face it, if it wasn't for Venetian Snares would we even be talking about Planet Mu right now? the guy is basically the battery for the entire label, if not now he has been for the past 7 years. If emailing Wai and asking him for aaron's contact information was the 'peak of his scouting abiities' it doesn't say much for his scouting abilities. I've heard plenty of stories about Mike P's ethics over the years and where his priorities are, and i absolutely refuse to give him credit for 'finding' vsnares (i realize you were not praising him at all, but for some reason this particular section compelled me to respond) Edited July 30, 2010 by Awepittance Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide awepittance's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/55996-dj-nate/page/3/#findComment-1383551 Share on other sites

I'm not gonna argue with you, though you gotta admit that being on Isolate records he was still pretty much "in the rough". Not so much as DJ Nate was, with fucking Geocities-style myspace and some wank on youtube, not quite so ghetto, but Isolate was small and Planet Mu wasn't. And it DID get much MUCH bigger mostly through Aaron's influence, but by the time he signed Snares Mike P had already leveraged some of the early hype and $$$ support of being a Virgin imprint into a fairly larger reach that most indie labels. This is all a gray area IMO. I might have come off as overly appreciative of Mike P, which is assure you I'm not. Juss' sayin' he has SOME merits. But honestly, i wrote that a month ago i think. By now, after having listened to the previews for what was suppose to be a PROPER release... fuck him man. Fuck Planet Mu. Fuck Mike P. Fuck labels, fuck singings, fuck press hype, fuck this shit. This shit is getting me well jaded. Honestly. I've never been one to be put off by hype for an artist, because so many times said artist is deserving of the hype. On the other hand, DJ Nate is literally THIS GUY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY-JOD3P_Bw Fuck you Mike P. - Sincerely, all former fans of your label Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/55996-dj-nate/page/3/#findComment-1383712 Share on other sites
