as a chicago native, ive been hearing the term 'juke' my entire life. I think its really just an evolution of the work 'jack' or 'jacking'. This was used by alot of the early house and Acid guys on the south side to describe the dance everyone was doing. which was basically sex simulation on the dance floor.

around the time that ghettotech/ghetto house was starting to come about (think 'face down Ass up' and 'the percolator') juke music was probably more popular than just about any genre among young people in the city's rougher neighborhoods. i went to a public school in the city and i remember kids, literally in 3rd grade, singing "its time for the percolator", over and over again dancing in the playground, and the first time I went to a juke party was in the summer of 6th grade. also, at ANY school dance function their would inevitably be a juke sesh with everyone screaming 'juke-it! juke-it!" over and over into the circle where people were dancing.

what footwork and this whole juke craze really came from is a derivative of crip-walking, a dance done by gang members to celebrate their affiliation where they would just spell out the word "C-R-I-P" with their feet. then it evolved to competitions and the invention of other dance moves, but i guess once a bunch of white British folks got a hold of this 'new' trend they went crazy for it and tried to market it like mad in a place where people had never heard of it. but i don't think this is anything more than a passing fad really. there's just no substance here.

this was an intresting post, thanks.

Yesterday, I went to the music store and I played DJ Nate on the sound system for fun. One of the employees genuinely adores DJ Nate, while the owner of the place told me this is crap and only 10 copies have been sold in the whole country so far.

In all seriousness, I too am a Chicago native of 13 years, now. I'd never once heard of footwerking until bambi passed by in chatmm.

If you went to any of the big clubs in Chicago for the past decade I guarantee you didn't hear a juke record being spun.

I know it sounds racist, but this really is a constrained, african american urban thing.

Well fuckin' duhhh. It takes about 20 seconds into any given track to understand that.

But what does that have to do with anything? imo if it was a more widely known genre Mu wouldn't have been so eager to pick it up.

True, they really took a chance with that esoteric 'acid' sound on UAE.

Does this mean all of Canada or does Quebec still consider itself a separate nation.

Just thought I would pop by. However, I prefer my IDMs discussions less meme-filled so I will leave you to it.

It's bigger here, so it generates more memes. There's memes over there as well, i mean you can't walk five posts without stumbling over a rollerskate, or a long arse f4rum post. (heh, soz). Anyway, i'd better shut up before i both scare you off for good, and get my account shut down @ your joint.

Yeah, the DJ Nate stuff is mostly annoying, but some of the other footwork/juke out that has a little more house leaning is pretty solid. I think the reason DJ Nate's getting the most publicity is that his stuff is definitely the most unique and different from the typical juke tracks. Here are probably my three favorite tunes from the scene so far.

I also like how other electronic artists are bringing the best parts of it into their own sounds (see the new Andrea 12" "Retail Juke" for a good example).

While I do find juke extremely poor, I will give credit to this track for the masterful interpolation of his name out of that vocal snippet.
