old fans who might have seen them, but not purchased the DVD, or who had lost the DVDs might feel you know "this guy makes his living off performing" and thus will wish to provide compensation for having enjoyed his performance. Not everyone is a cheap asshole with a sense of entitlement you know.

 

Also in terms of return on investment it's a fucking no-brainer. Hosting is ridiculously cheap, encoding is cheap. He sells like 5 of them he's made his investment back and everything else is fucking gravy.

the hosting price is a good point, so he can't really lose anything from doing this. but that last move isn't something that brings a new batch of fans though, plus reissuing old stuff loses the novelty, it's something record labels do not a guy that wants to break that mentality. i still connected the 5$ to that new show specifically, not to the idea that he's a working guy that needs cash.

disagree; he's on the front page of reddit. even if you're not registered, IAmA is a default subreddit. squillions of people are seeing this IAmA and there's plenty of links in there. gigantic exposure rate.

doesn't reddit cover similar demographics as youtube, all kinds of talk shows like conan, general internets.

i think he's at the stage where everyone who might have liked him already likes him, he's far from obscure.

When you first found out about Aphex - did you just assume you had discovered him on his first release? Or did you go and find his older material? When I first heard Bill Hicks, Louis CK, George Carlin - I went out and found a bunch of their back catalog. Now I didn't have an easy way to purchase that material at the time - if I had I would have happily picked it up at reasonable prices.
