he seems like a darwinist/atheist type of guy... the kind who thinks he's better than everyone. which is ok.

i like him. i would definitely like watching the show if there were more moments where it wasn't just really depressing and downbeat.

i want him to actually succeed at something for once and stop wallowing in self-pity. his stand up comedy is funny, especially hilarious when he pinpoints certain groups... but i find it rather draining on the show when nothing good ever happens. then again, i've only seen a few episodes.

pretty much agree with that. when he really lets the hate flow he can be absolutely hilarious and honest. but i've noticed a sort of self congratulatory "i'm a real adult with kids look at me" attitude that pops up in his comedy. it's sort of off-putting to me. plus constant self pity is just obnoxious. what i do like about his show is that he balances wildly different tones, sort of like woody allen. it just isn't always successful.

i like louis ck, though. i like him a lot.

I think the children thing makes everything else he does more solid and funnier.

I think he is able to portray self pity cause he is fucking kicking ass in the industry that he is involved in. Dude is good at what he does and knows it and he plays off of that.

and i can easily relate to the moments in the show where he is depressing/depressed, so perhaps i am biased.

That's cause he's a real adult with kids. When you have them, life changes. i don't mean that they have to become the all-consuming attention black hole, but life changes. Totally agree about the balance of the show, and how the dark bits don't always come off right. Sometimes his drollness is just a little too dry.

Also, in what fucking world does Vamos Scorchos live where louis ck isn't successful at what he does?

if he didnt have those fucked up moments in his life his comedic sense of timing/writing wouldn't be what it is today. the guy capitalized on his failures and turned them into gold, metaphorically and literally speaking. if he's feeling confident because of that, i dont blame him whatsoever.

Oh yeah for sure agree with that. It's just in the show it doesn't always quite work out.

i'm sure he's presenting a really authentic picture of that, but that attitude, a "real" adult, bothers the shit out of me. it's a personal bias though. he's funny as fuck, not going to argue that. and his show is mostly brilliant. there's just times where i can't relate to it and don't see a need to admire someone for having children.

i would say, I don't admire anyone for having children, but I do honestly admire their ability to put up with them. Maybe that sounds harsh, but seriously, kids are a ton of fucking work, and having them come up not sociopathic is quite a triumph. But i see what you are saying..and I think I partially agree with you.

Louis is for me already up there with the (my) legends, Murphy, Hicks and Pryor.

Although nobody will ever make me laugh like Pryor, but there's still time.

CK does a damned good job, on the whole, of balancing the parental insider info factor to not come across as a preachy dullard bleating out platitudes about "those darned kids!"

Even before I had a daughter, I lol'd hard at his stories of being a dad. For instance, going to those fucking nauseating Parents & Their Kids parties where he "

" multiple times to stave off boredom. I lol'd until I pissed at that bit even BEFORE I had Greta...because at any parents/kids parties, I'm that guy. I'm not fat...at least, not yet, but I would rather get fat eating the cookies than pretend I give a shit about other people and their kids.

You don't have to admire someone just for having them. It's more about the struggle to raise them correctly without having to pretend your paedophile husband hypnotized you into murdering them.

Also, he make it scalper-free, which is awesome. Dave Chapelle came to Austin short noticed and so many loudmouth and drunk attendees came (many who scored expensive second-hand tickets) that it essentially ruined the show.

Yeah, exactly, I was thinking Pearl Jam's position with Ticketmaster might have been a lot more successful if they had done it 10-15 years later with the internets in full swing.

Wife and I will be seeing CK in Seattle. WOO!

so yeah, first episode, it isn't too strong but it does make you smile a lot. i liked the more absurd elements like that no/yes parking sign and louie's car getting destroyed for no reason at all.

i actually thought it was the case with 2 previous seasons too, that the first episodes were much weaker in comparison with the rest.

I love Louie even when it doesn't really make me LOL, his whole bit with the break up was great social commentary on fucking being honest with yourself and others, and her acting was spot on. The motorcycle was purty good. Yeh, the sign bit was fucking awesome

Anyway in the reviews I've seen of the first episode, some reviewers say they have seen more episodes and that this first episode was not nearly as good as the others.

I agree...and as someone who has tried and failed more than once to make a good short (narrative) film, I can tell you it's incredibly difficult. Why Louie stands out so starkly, so brilliantly, as a TV show, is because each episode would make an excellent short film. The final monologue from his then ex-girlfriend was equal parts clever and accurate. How many of us can recall a similar encounter with a girlfriend/boyfriend? Yet, I've never seen that sort of dynamic represented in a screenplay. But that's what great comics do and CK's greatness is no longer in question.

Edited to add: The bullying episode from last season stands alone as one of my favorite ever short films.
