I liked the Lynchian ambient track during the first scene with Lynch

This. Also the sad piano music during the alternative opening credits

It's so true, this for example -

last episode was dumb.

That's it, that's all you're going to elucidate - In what way was the episode intellectually sub-par ? That's the kind of reaction that a teenager gives when they've been caught masturbating in their parents' basement and is grounded (not sure if those terms are still used or that I'm getting old, and do American houses still generally have basements ?)

I personally thought it was a great episode and a fine middle junction to the trilogy of shows. The whole Lynchian framing before he meets Lynch was spot on - even as he met the receptionist I was thinking 'something oddly familiar with the lighting camerawork and dialogue here' so when the inevitable happened I was delighted. And what a great part he played too - the whole deal with the stopwatch (and unexplained gun in the drawer) and cards with dated jokes as he thinks that Louie's not ready for modern satirical comedy yet, him showing how you should present the Tonight Show with the use of music & complete silence, and him blindly sending Louie off to get some boxing training in preparation for the show.

The kids (as always) were flawless, their slow and continued detachment from Louie is a great continued side story from the rest of the show - loved the section a few eps back where the elder daughter goes missing and the younger one calls out in Slovenian much to the bewilderment of her father. The look of joy on the girl's face when she gets the woman for shop lifting combined with the shame/embarrassed from Louie's face was a nice touch

Looking forward to seeing how this trilogy of episodes ends next week.

Finally up to date on this season - great stuff. And yes David Lynch and all that surrounding him was amazing - when they came in through the office door (notice the door behind?) I half expected them to start speaking backwards.

And yeah sure there's some things that don't always hit (or resonate I guess is today's lingo) with every single viewer, but so what - it's one of the most unique shows out there.

I didn't know Lynch was in this episode. It seems pretty masturbatory if you have to recognize the cultural significance of an actor to appreciate the episode.

Only upon a rewatch did I catch that Lynch's secretary is a different women when she answers the phone. GOOD EPISODE.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

Or, maybe all of the very overt nods to Lynch's style contributed more to the storyline - which at the same time provided, through its own merits, a biting satire on the commodification of humour and entertainment.

I mean, look at it this way. I didn't know who the actress was for the bookstore girl episode and the episode was still good. This one just falls flat if you didn't recognize Lynch and notice the subtle homages. Yeah, there were a couple of good gags, but it wasn't as cohesive as his other stuff. I think if they didn't split the Tonight Show story arc, it would've been a lot more watchable.

Which actress, Parker Posey or Chloe Sevigny?

I didn't think the episode hinged on recognizing Lynch and the stylistic homage...it could have been any actor really, and the point about how humour and entertainment have been commodified and packaged would still make sense. Im pretty sure there's more to come with this story arc.

Part of it for me though gets at this line: "there were a couple of good gags". i don't think his show is one that aims solely at being a laugh riot (and I'm not implying that's what you're saying Hoodie - not trying to put words in your mouth) and for me that's a large part of the appeal. This show tries to go beyond simple genre tags like comedy/drama. It's like Trailer Park Boys - yeah there was some hilarious shit in there, but there's a lot of social commentary as well. I guess he doesn't always succeed, but I love that he pushes boundaries and tries different things and hopefully makes some people who otherwise wouldn't, think about the world in different ways.

Absolutely, I think that's the major draw for me - I treat each episode as a mini film and if it has comedic elements all the better, but the story is mainly what I watch it for. I mean my personal favourite episode (well, one that sticks in my mind as being the strongest) of this series was the Parker Posey episode (the one they go around town at night) and I honestly can't remember a single joke in it - yet I loved every minute, with my heart in my mouth about what exactly she was going to lead Louie to next.

There were already some surreal elements in the series before lynch showed up, I also don't think recognizing lynch is integral in valuing the episode, lynch does a fine job in playing his part.

some misses in the season for me but mostly it was excellent and Louis has reached a new plateau of artistic ability.

ZOMG! Lazerz pew pew pew!!!!11!!1!!!!1!oneone!shift+one!~!!!
