In the long term, we hope this means people will do awesome new things

with the Minecraft engine and play around with it. We want to buy

and/or license good mods and/or total conversions and sell them

ourselves. It’s possible we might have a mod marketplace for selling

and buying mods that fans have written, or we might purchase and

integrate nice mods that fit the main theme of Minecraft.

Just to clear up two things:

 

The access cost won’t be prohibitively expensive, and if you make a good mod or something else based on the source code, it’s highly likely we will want to license it.

I find the commercial policy of minecraft a bit weird.

I mean, I agree the game's concept is amazing but do they really need to set the BETA PRICE to about 15€/20$ ? It's just a beta after all and with the success of the game they could easily set it to 5 euros and I'm sure its development would go well. The text you just quote confirm what I was feeling about it.

Thinking so hard about these payment methods actually before its released...

Also I don't like the fact they marked in the purchase license agreement that the game could eventually not be released. This policy doesn't fit the DIY vibe of the game.

beta for minecraft isn't like beta for other games imo. the game in its current state is basically fully-formed and playable. also notch has said the price for a modders licence should be pretty cheap.

besides, i've gotten more hours of playtime out of minecraft for EUR15 than i have out of pretty much any AAA title for EUR40/50. and, notch never anticipated this level of success.

I agree with you on these points but I won't be surprised if the game in his future goes with an unfair commercial policy. Because they create something unique and really could abuse of that. I wish they won't though

Being hooked on Minecraft I'd pay up to 100€ for the full version if that was the only way to play it.

Beta or no beta it's definitely worth much more than 15€.

I like this route. I was afraid they were going to try a mod API where you'd hook in your own code and I can't see them pull that off with enough flexibility. It seems to me this could also open the door for much more community contributions getting incorporated in the game.

that shit storm got me banned on the minecraft reddit forum, all because i linked my soundcloud on there in hopes notch would click on it, and got treated like i linked some kind of malicious site that gave your pc all sorts o digital aids
