OHH! My friend started a lan server, and we found a total of 1 clay block. I guess that explains it.

Also, if anyone finds a giant cobble hourglass/double ziggurat, they should make some sort of path back to spawn. I can't find it and I want to finish it.

I wonder if my stuff survived my death. If it did, that's your reward. A lot of stuff/moss/obsidian

Funny thing is, I was about to build a portal there. Yea, that works too.

I have a question about how the portal to coolville 2 was made (haven't used it yet but I understand it is there). Did you build it as follows?

1 Create first portal on Pete's plaza area.

2 go to CV2 the old way by cart, then build a second portal at CV2 linking to another place in the nether.

3 Enter the nether (either at CV2 or Pete's plaza), then find the other portal opening in the Nether, by perseverance and luck, and I guess doing your best to head in the right direction?

Since I tried building a portal in my new cathedral my plan was to use this approach to enter the portal, end up at some new place in the nether, then somehow find my way back to Pete's place. But my plans were screwed when I created my portal only to find that it led directly to Pete's portal. I guess my only solution now is to destroy my portal, go through Pete's portal, and then try to count steps in the nether until I think I'm in the right spot, then create another portal and hope it ends up somewhere near my cathedral?

pretty much, except it wasn't perseverance and luck. pete noted the x/y/z of the first portal, then used that to find it from the second one.

I think it is chunk based, You have to be far enough away from the first portal. The nether is like a scaled down version of reality, portal wise.

edit: not chunk based... "Normal World portals that are within 1024 distance of each other on either X or Z axis are almost always going to link to the same Nether realm portal on initial construction because 1024 translates to a distance of 128 in the Nether Realm, and the game checks for existing Portals within 128 radius around the destination (the 257x257x128 box)."

That is because going from nether -> normal it still performs the same calculation. It multiplies the X and Z coordinates by 8 and looks within a 128 block radius for the closest portal, and if there isn't one it generates one.

right, portal from nether to "overworld" is no prob. It's the other way round that seems unnecessarily restrictive. In fact I'm not even sure I buy the 1024 distance. Is there an easy way to count? Maybe using the F3 function? Because my new cathedral is pretty fucking far away from CV1 and Pete's portal, and it still leads there...

i'm gonna test it later. walk from mine to 1024 past kokoon's castle using f3 co-ords and make a portal. it does make sense though. your portal might be >1024 using x/z triangulation, but probably not 1024 in one unique axis, if you get me.

looks like "level.dat" got wiped out. i replaced it with an older file, being only 206 bytes big it doesn't look like it contains some important information of state of the world... take a look around and report what's missing.

level.dat contains the seed. replacing it won't change any explored chunks, it'll just use a new seed when generating previously unexplored chunks.

well then, since i took the file from a watmm world backup, the seed should remain the same.

say i wanted to make a floating / hanging garden, is there any way to encourage grass to grow on it other than building like a bridge of dirt from the ground up to it? or am i wrong in thinking grass won't just grow on dirt placed up there
