Quaristice

when i heard this album initially, i thought it was dry, not groovy like their old shit.

then it clicked.

holy shit this is fucking great, and it fits so perfectly in the context of untilted/untilted live sets and overstubz. i've been listening mostly to quadrange and versions. standouts are theplcplc, notwotwo, perlence range 3, fol4, perlence losid 2, one of the 901s, and plyphon and outh9x (from reg quarisbits).

i remember thinking this album was a bit of a dud (all of it). redundant, even boring at times. it came out as i was getting into ae, and i think it's their most difficult release by far. but given time, i have such a big boner. it's so claustrophobic and subtly frenzied, while maintaining aspects of precision ae, and tons of what i'll describe as "noise" solos that give the songs their live feel.

this is probably the most challenging ae release yet, and by saying that i mean, it still hasn't clicked with me.

yeah i still find this one really lame. which means I need to try harder, because I know B+B aren't THAT bad.

there are some absolutely awesome tracks on quaristice. but some of it just sounds like they're taking the piss.

actually, a lot of the album reminds me of an amazing late 90s/early 2000s electronic duo from my home town, gate:

http://www.mp3.com.au/gate

.. just the overall 'jammy' sound of everything, i guess. gate did a lot of their stuff live in the studio, and it's pretty obvious quaristice was recorded the same way.

i still should really get into making a custom quaristice playlist.

Quaristice is a great set of work. I might be bias to it as it was my first Autechre album. Versions and the EPs only make it more valuable to me as good stuff.

It seems to me like their most playful, unfinished sounding album... like they were just having a bit of fun with it, and managed to make some cool stuff along the way. The ambient tracks are stunning, Parallel Suns, Notwo (and Notwotwo) and Outh9x are absolutely fantastic, can never get enough of these tracks.

Fell in love with Perlence Suns as well recently.

I have been raping this album for the last few days. granted, it's all over the shop, but it must be their most diverse work - doesn't plod along like Oversteps. So bassy too, the whole thing thumps

I was sceptical about this album at first too, and I really dig it now.

Outh9x is my favourite ae track.

Nice to see the love for Outh9x, a lot of their closing tracks are amongst my favorites - Nuane, Sublimit...

Guest couch

I just put everything from the album and EPs into a playlist except for Altibzz, Outh9X and that hour long track cause when they come up on shuffle it's out of place.

Having listened to the album over 30x it's still a mystery to me. Only the first half I've gotten my head around, sort of.

i listened to quaristice last night, with my eyes closed lying on my bed, and i got a better understanding of it, like it's clicking.

i think the theme is like futuristic, i mean, you could say so about most/all? of their releases but it has lots of mechanical type noises and what seem like sound effects. pretty cool.

fuck yeah. i think the inconsistency and intensity of quaristice makes a lot more sense matched against the consistency and subtlety of oversteps. you can hear similar techniques on both albums (especially in the reverbs) but they go in such opposite directions. i've been going back and forth between the two a lot lately.

i've been just discovering the beauty of perlence losid 2 and fol4. they both feel so dense but there is a ton of groove to sift through in each track.

i was listening to the plc ccc when walking home last night by a school at 2 am, and goddamn there is some scary shit going on in that track, especially in the left channel i think. supernatural horror music.

I've let this really long quaristlist play at work a few times, and I love it; quaristice needs time and space:

Altibzz

The PlclCpC

IO (mons)

Phylopn

Perlence range3

Perlence Suns

Simmm

Paralel Suns

Tankraken

Rale

fol4

90101-51-6

Blyz Castl

Theswere

WNSN

chenc9

Notwo

Altichyre

Perlence losid 2

i feel that the other quaristice releases kinda cheated the album. they should have just put out one good release...

disagree. the alt versions incorporate many more than is in the title, ane its awesome hearing chenc9 worked into perlence range 3 (ithink thats the one)

theres prob a ton of unreleased material from this time. many more 901s, perlences, etc

i agree. many times i notice myself switching between different versions of the same track, loving different bits and pieces from all of them. which is nice to an extent, but it's unsatisfying at the same time. like i can't stop thinking what the combined definitive track should sound like. it wouldn't bother me as much if they had labelled the quadrange eps as the "quaristice sessions". but instead, it feels like we have a huge collection of demos and it's up to us to decide which one is definitive. that's their job. not mine. if they had made a double album with a selection of all the tracks, this might have been their magnum opus. now it's a definitive album with lots of tiny short tracks accompanied by hours worth of their longer brothers. i feel a double album without different versions of the same track would have been the best of both worlds. and of course the separately released quaristice sessions.

a lot of people here had a really fun time taking it upon themselves to make a custom quaristice playlist, its that too much for you to do yourself you are missing out quite a bit i think.

Other than Altibzz, Notwo and Outh9X, I still feel absolutely nothing when listening to Quaristice other than very occasional annoyances when particular sounds come in. Absolutely nothing. I don't understand it.

I think I do understand the fun-bit of making your own playlist though. It's just the "switching between different versions of the same track, loving different bits and pieces from all of them" part which just isn't compatible with putting tracks into a playlist, IMO. I have to do some Richie Hawtin DE9 kinda-thing to make some sort of new version of the album. If I could I would, but I'd rather have the B-boys doing that.
