Guest analogue wings

it's not the Monotron Electribe like the name suggests - it's the Monotron II

It's a Monotron with an analogue sequencer, noise, eg (3 fixed waveforms), lfo and vco waveforms

PLUS an analogue drum machine (3 sounds) with a digital sequencer.

Guest hahathhat

when you're korg and you sell this shit, you have to bet on it. you have to cut deals to buy all the parts, set up manufacturing, and guess how many to make in advance. the monotron was a gamble for korg, but not a huge one. if it tanked, it was small, so they wouldn't lose much. it went alright, and so now they've scaled it up a bit.

also, i wager they don't entirely understand all this, and are carefully watching how these things get used. what mods did people do to the monotron, and how many of those have now showed up as a stock option on the monotribe?

maybe next year for the electribe, brandi !

I am sorry, but I love my monotron, and this looks great to me. I can't hate on it, you can probably buy ~50 of those for the price of a roland jupiter 80.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

I think it looks pretty fucking wicked...sure to be cheap too. no midi is a disappointment, but I am intrigued by the sync jacks - I suspect they are trigger sync inputs/outputs allowing you to sync the monotribe with an audio source (like the trigger sync on the jomox mbase for example). if so then lack of midi is not such a problem...

I have no prob with this product as a "monotron II with seq" at all. In fact it's nice, I'm glad korg is doing this, and i may even pick one up. But to tease with the electribe name, and make me think a new "electribe" is coming out (which have gotten better and better and more advanced per generation) is just gut wrenching. :_(

From another forum, can't check the validity...

  Quote

key person behind the monotron is a young engineer who has recently joined to Korg. if my memory serves, at the job interview he brought a handmade analogue designed by himself to show his ability and enthusiasm to analogue. no doubt his dream is to develop a new analogue in Korg. He was hired but Korg obviously couldn't give a go for a revision MS20 for the business even if they'd love to do. Their especially old engineers must shared the same dream so with the advise and help from the elder engineers the monoron was developed. so you see the compromises of the final design and their message for the moddability. Still, they weren't sure if it would be a success but apparently it was, at least enough to give another go for a next project. I bet monotribe is again from the same young engineer. And it's also clear that Korg is not going to develop a full featured more expensive analogue soon. business wise they are still researching the market, and basically I feel the tops of Korg are more interested in seeking or creating a new category / audience rather than just chasing a trend and nostalgia; their mind is more like Nintendo was so for DS and Wii, I think. Korg has always been trying to be unique. that's how I see this from a Japanese perspective.

Key is going to be price point.
