I like born to die & video games. Definitely something creepy about her - her face is a mask. (Also, in some shots she reminds me of Cynthia from Weeds.)

I actually got chills a couple of times watching Born to Die because of the expressions in her face. Something says to me that there is a deep awful sadness in her, and she never wants it to come out.

Weird narrative to this one. I'm interested to see what happens in her career. I wish her the best.

Oof, her Saturday Night Live performance was dreadful. The suspicion that she's an audio engineering by-product seems to have been confirmed. When she would sing in a mid-high range, it sounded good but when she went for those low registers--of which there are many in "Video Games"--it sounded like a lowing heifer.

ok maybe i don't have as much repsect for her because of that stuff but i mean, aren't all pop artists fabricated?

It's that this one is fabricated with the intent of appealing to the whole "indie is cool" thing going on.

ah.. gotcha

As a contrast, Kelly Clarkson was on last Saturday and she can fucking belt it out. I think that her weight gain made her voice even better (see also: Ann Wilson, Etta James et al.) Florence Welch is incredible live as is Ellie Goulding. Live pitch-shifting/autotune and beefed-up vocal backing tracks are always possible in these cases but it always seems like you can tell these things if you listen closely enough.

Yeah man, and the real shame is Clarkson's recent singles aren't even that great musically, but her SNL performance was clearly better and far more enjoyable. Well, I take that back the whole Del Ray performance was hilarious. "Video Games" is well-written song, and Lana Del Ray couldn't even pull off a half-assed rendition. My wife and I were talking and she said "hell, they should of just sold this song to Florence." I agreed - she or a number of other current singers could of done a better version, but it wouldn't be gimmicky and edgy and blah blah without ducklips crooning it.

When I see Lana Del Ray singing live, I feel like she's channeling this:

I'm lucky that in my day to day business if I so choose I can avoid mainstream music/radio. This track of hers came on the radio today whilst I was driving and I quite liked it. I think it's the second time I have heard it. For radio fodder, it wasnt too bad.

I don't get what's so wrong about an artist changing their style to sell more records. Tori Amos did it, Katy Perry did it, Pink did it, Nelly Furtado did it, the Black Eyed Peas did it, Darius Rucker did it ... I mean, to be fair, sure, Darius is the only one who also got lip injections, but.

Are we talkin about real artists here?

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

Lana Del Ray and those commentating on her are self-aware of this, hence why she seems different. There's now a generation of "well I need to try to be more indie or ironic or whatever" now. I think Neon Indian did it to fit into the chillwave thing. Another obvious example is the witch house project by the Deftones guy or that crappy band She Wants Revenge - that dude was a rapper for big beat tracks at one point and in a psychedelic band before that.

Also, I also have a pet theory that MIA, then an art student, heard "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani and decided to quasi-Jamaican toast over similar tracks, wear lisa frank neon, and name drop terrorist groups to get more attention than her graffiti/pop art exhibitions.
