I like this one, you hear it a lot when out atm. Otherwise I agree with the general opinion here she seems like a complete marketing scheme aiming at the "hipster" (lol)/wanna-be indie kids audience. That obviously doesn't mean everything she does is bad though.

My only problem with lana is that she's a marketing product from begining to end, and she tries to hide that and acts like she's genuine.

And alot of people fall for it for some reason. I think its her eyes and botox filled lips.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

No, they're trying to make it in the indie business and the hipster are falling for it.

Whether you sell your records to dirty college kids or to clean, oh-so-clean suburban teenage girls with the whitest teeth and hair that shines like a mannequin's and they smell like a musky Jolly Rancher and wear those super-thin tanktops with the frilly edges over their yoga p--OHMY--NRFF FFRHHH!_UNHHHHHHH!!!

Edit: Sorry.

It's a business all the same.

Also, from "Video Games," the line "It's better than I ever even knew" is so fucking horrible it makes me want to publish all the poetry I wrote in high school. I love the melody to the song, but I think the lyrics are poopy.

I agree with encey innit. Hey, aren't hipsters the most brand-obsessed of them all? They're all about enhancing themselves with products and musical products, so therefore they're perfect targets for product marketing. If a company is trying to get money out of them and the resulting thing is something do actually want, then surely that's a win win situation for everyone. :) woop

At the end of the day you either like the tune or you don't. If your in your teens or 20's I know it's important which artists you identify with but when you get a bit older these things don't really matter.

So I like the song and everything else really isn't important. To me anyway.

College youths are a market just like those mall chicks I was referring to earlier. I don't think that setting up some scheme to manipulate consumers' obsession with image has any more to do with it in one case than in the other. Plus, maybe Lana likes singing this style of music!

Good criticism of the Lana Del Ray apologists

    Quote
The conversation about Lana Del Rey shouldn’t be “she tried really hard, you guys” but “she needs to work on this some more and come back when she’s got a stronger act”. The key word there? WORK. Work takes dedication, time and effort. Work is not fun. Work is a commitment. Work is a promise that you’re going to earn whatever success comes your way. Work is long hours for little to no pay, toiling in obscurity while you hone your craft. And there’s no guarantee that work will make you rich and famous. Which is probably why everyone wants to celebrate Try. Try is easy. All the special snowflakes can try and congratulate each other on making the monumental effort to show up and be merely okay. As long as Try is all it takes, the Cult of Special will always reign supreme.

I'm going for OK here. She pulls a few of my strings with her "although I'm o so popular, I'm still a broken odd duck in the pond" persona. Plus the video games song has a kind of vintage moody air to it. Haven't heard anything else, though. So please don't use this against me if the rest of her repertoire plainly sucks.

Exactly but the real indies, and I include the watmmer type, won't fall for it. WILL YOU???

I mean she's like the skrillex of folk.

So the consensus seems to be that she has one good song, is generally bad live/needs work, and looks like a duck.

There's a bit of self-fulfilling irony when someone named patternoverlap presents us with the conclusion we've reached consensus. But I guess you can say opinions have converged into some consensus. I'd still prefer an official poll though.

lol. I second the poll idea on the condition that we email our consensus to her directly.

Seriously. She could have waited until she learned how to actually sing these tracks before appearing live on national television. High School talent show bullshit in action.
