it seems we have our own moody-retro-MOR marketing machine going in the uk except this girl has a voice kinda like dusty springfield.

At least it's enjoyable I guess. Hyped artists still weird me out. Felt the same way about this chick...so manufactured, but more like a failed hybrid between all the "it" diva pop singers of now.

video games is a great song, probably because they stole most of it. The rest is pretty terrible to my ears.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Why so much hate? I think this is fucking brilliant. Not the music, but the whole marketing thing. She basically went from being a noone to world famous by changing her public persona - which proves that people care 10x more about image than the music. Now this isn't something unique by itself (best example being lady gaga) but the fact that this one seems to be marketed towards the "indie" crowd and still manages to pull off the same thing was enough to put a smile on my face for a good 5 minutes.

So what's an example of a marketing item that presents LDR as 'indie'? I have only seen links to videos on the web that at most mention her in connection with the word 'indie,' without that term really meaning anything (as it is usually used today). But I have mostly taken any marketing or promotion I've seen to be presenting her as simply a singer.

"Lana, extensive research tells us that your lips are 50% too small for anyone to give a shit about you or your songs. If you would be willing to botox them into oblivion, it would help refine your image as a sultry retro blowjob queen from the heavens and we'd nail that male aged 45-60 demographic, which would increase your commercial viability by 27.3%. The numbers don't lie, pucker up or resign yourself to Pitchfork 8.2 barely missing BNM status."

That's super cynical but something tells me it's not too far off.

Exactly. This is what i've been saying the whole time

True indies don't like her, only hipsters do, because those like her for being presented as indie.

I listened to her new album. Her vocal melodies are really good. Surely most of us can agree on that.

the marketing discussion is just a distraction. Fact - every musician you listen to has been marketed extensively. Everyone has an image. Plenty of musicians come from money. Who gives a shit.

I like two of her songs a lot (Video Games & Yayo). The rest not so much. Hope this kind of production catches on though.

No, they were marketed for what they are, not what they are supposed to be.
