Dear Customer,

We are sorry to announce that the vinyl re-issues of Aphex Twin's 'I Care Because You Do' and 'Richard D. James Album' have been delayed.

Both records will now be released on the 26th November 2012.

Warp have been working to ensure that the releases are the best quality they can be.

During this process we have come across a few difficulties which have resulted in this delay.

We can also now confirm that '...I Care Because You Do' will be recut from the original vinyl production master tape. 'Richard D James Album' will be re-cut for vinyl from the CD master by Kevin Metcalfe, the original mastering engineer on '…I Care Because You Do'.

GAHHHH WHYYYYY

When Mr James is producing his album he will have done a stereo mixdown, probably to DAT. Note that a mixdown is not mastering, despite what half the internet thinks. However, confusingly this DAT may be referred to as the 'master tape'. It is this 'master tape' that is then sent to a mastering engineer to master, i.e produce a master copy from which all other copies will be made. The mastering process is significantly different depending on whether you are mastering for vinyl, cd, broadcast etc.

Warp have either lost (major fuck up) or simply don't have access to (minor fuck up) the original DAT for RDJ. So they are remastering the original CD master for vinyl. The process should be original DAT -> mastering -> vinyl, but is instead CD master -> mastering -> vinyl.

It's a bit like if you were going to produce an art print, but instead of going to the original artwork, you copied a previous print where the colour is a little bit off.

nononono don't funk with my heart...

Thank you Wise Grasshopper! I presumed with common sense this might be the case but it was enjoyable and educational to hear it from someone who knows.

I should add that there are lots of potential variables. If the CD master was very close to the original DAT, i.e. no 'creative' mastering, maybe minor level and eq matching, which is entirely plausible, and the mastering engineer and/or cutting house does a really good job, you could end up with a better piece of vinyl than the original release. Ideally you should be starting from the original DAT though.

hopefully itll be better quality, so I can laugh at all the pathetic ebay hawkers failing to sell their $70.00 copy of a 30 min album

$2.33 per minute! In the time it takes you to read this message, you'd have spent 5 cents.

agreed

You could just buy the CD release that has been available since forever. As a bonus, you avoid all that annoying surface noise too :emotawesomepm9:

btw, this thread disappoints me every single day.

Hopefully the artwork will be from the master and not a rescan of the CD cover.

Can anyone comment on the sound quality of the 1972 releases? I saw them in my local shop and the cover art is shitty, upscaled photocopied garbage, but if they sound decent I might skip the warp versions for the sake of my wallet.

That's really sad to hear about the artwork... I'd say you're better off with the WARP reissues. Sounds like 1972 dropped the ball on this one, despite the seemingly good job they did with SAW II.

I probably wouldn't think twice about giving my SAW II 1972 copy away.

I'll take it and pay for shipping.
