lol that is nowhere near the reason why everyone hates us. Most sensible people here don't feed into the gun = manly image either. Of course you would never be on board with such an idea if it were true, as that would classify the entire UK as a bunch of sissies due to your gun ban.

Reflecting on this, I had this thought:

When was the last non-US school shooting? Wasn't it that nut in the Netherlands who killed those kids on that island?

If that was it, when was the one before it (anywhere outside the US)?

I'd be curious if this was a uniquely American phenomenon, and if any correlation between our obsession with gun ownership, and the (mis)guided belief that owning a gun equals "freedom" and "right to bear arms" makes America a better, safer place.

What really scares me is how gun sales go through the roof after one of these tragedies - only because the gun nuts fear their precious guns will be taken away from them by the government.

There's the Dunblane school shooting in Scotland a while back. That's the only one I can think of over here.

It isn't a America only phenomenon. I know there's been a lot in Germany. But America sure is number one by some distance.

There's some lists here:

United States: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_shootings_in_the_United_States

The US needs a page on its own. That's just sick.

Gun sales went up after Obama got elected. Gun sales also went up because it is Thursday. Gun sales will keep increasing due to rational fears of a big government being a bigger threat to the nation than individuals who would rather not leave the defense of their loved ones in the hands of some high school drop out police officer.

I actually think that kind of proves it's a problem with gun control. Which some has been quite dismissive of.

Of course it's a human problem, and not just a United States problem. But as long as some of these nut-cases has easy accessibility to guns, it's going to continue, to be a bigger problem in the US. It's easier to do a massacre with handguns/automatic weapons, than a knife (stating the obvious).

And I'm not being anti-american. I actually really love the US. But the gun fascination (and I'm just repeating myself) is just something I will never understand.

Anyway.. this continued gun control debate, is probably tiring to some. So I will stop now.

I thought it was because of George Dubya.

Anyway, guns and bravado are a recipe for disaster. Responsible gun owners are level-headed, rational, and aware that there are strict rules of safety to proper handling of a firearm.

If some dude depends on guns to prove their manliness, then something is fuct up here. Guns aren't toys.

But mostly because the times that I've held and shot one, I've always felt this strange magnetism to blow my own head off or shoot someone near me.

I love that. Comes from the same impulse I get of jumping into train tracks when fast trains are plowing through, or jumping off high ledges. Fucking mad.

i think all you guys have attested to is that YOU shouldn't have guns. not everyone has the same type of psychotic impulses.

for those non-americans or people who haven't been to america, there is really no way to rationalize the current "gun" debate in the US. i posted the below to one of the many FB threads about this though:

there are 2 issues i have with the gun debate - the 2nd amendment (and the whole bill of rights) were created because the founding fathers were scared that an organized government presence was going to rule their lives, like it did under the brits. (remember the anti federalists?) they were also scared of the crazies, but americas commitment to guns is nothing more than commitment to personal technological advantage.

it is impossible to argue that we need guns so that we can prevent government intrusion into our private lives. the purpose of guns in 2012 is such that the 2nd amendment no longer applies in its original context. who is going to oppose the US gov't with firearms? so america must redefine *why* guns are necessary (especially in densely populated areas).

the main question that has to be asked is - is the purpose of guns useful enough that it offsets the danger?

the answer is easy with cars and planes and drill presses, but each are potentially lethal through misuse/malicious use.

holy fuck. okay, so i still think that gun control is a problem, but holy shit. america what the fuck are you doing.

of course, there's always the idea that we have a pretty high percentage of upper-class population, and maybe some in other countries just don't get reported? anyway, what the fuck.
