people who WANT STUFF and put emphasis on HAVING. i think id feel a lot better using my wages to get classical piano lessons lol. all these new keyboards are going to be pretty good and cheaper before long. now to concentrate on spritual/aesthetic/playing sort of areas of music? w00t

i have to concur with this.

in reality how many people on the forum turn a profit from making music?

in the end does it really matter if you have a korg ms 20 mini or the minibrute or analog 4?

yes these pieces of kit are cool as fuck but how integral are they in the big picture?

when listening to any composition do you ever say to yourself, gee this song was made with ______piece of gear and i like it more?

Uziq uses the v/a nord on all of my fave tracks,

squarepusher uses NI soft symths for the majority of his work post GP,snares does all of his stuff in renoise etc etc.

i am sure no one can tell what is being used in tracks once they are completed

if we all used our existing gear to it's fullest potential instead of buying the newest coolest thing there would be a lot more high quality music floating around?

Since when did owning a quality piece of equipment have to be justified by whether or not you make a profit from the music you make with it? What is wrong with wanting something because you enjoy playing it?

For what it's worth, I make a bit of money off music, not loads, but enough to keep a roof over my head, and food in my stomach for the last few years. I do realise that isnt down to what equipment I've used, but a lot of hard work, and even more luck. Whatever though, that doesnt make me any more entitled to owning something, simply because I might make some "return on the investment"...

Kit is as integral as you decide to make it. And the ability to work with it can be as important an aspect of music making as theory and compositional skills. I really do dislike this suggestion that kit is a substitute for talent. Being able to use that stuff isn't easy, not at all. The 3 examples you've decided to list all have an abundance in both production skills and musicality.

Aaand for what it's worth, dunno about MikeP's set up, but Squarepusher certainly doesnt only use NI softsynths, and snares has a shit load of hardware.

you are in the 2% of people on the forum that makes enough money to live off of their music.

to most it's a hobby that = a deficit on the bank statement

i am not suggesting that the value of having fun making music needs to be justified by dollars, but in the end most people buying this gear are having fun with it not turning a profit.

i think i made the point that chasing the next newest thing is a trap everyone falls into,as opposed to actually making the best with what you already have available.

Next newest thing? I've wanted an ms20 for years! I also don't yet own an actual hardware synth, and it'd be useful to play one of these live rather than stabbing at a shitty midi controller that is limited by my netbook's processing power.

I think we all talk gear about 1000% more than we actually buy gear.
