Just FYI - I'm personally gonna duck out from this thread. Been too distracted from work and tomorrow I plan to garden and spring clean all day while drinking beer and maybe make some music.

My pet theory is simple. These brothers, who are lifelong refugees and perpetually detached from their homeland at some point turned their interests of Chechen separatism into action at some point while living in the U.S. decided to act for the general insurgency in that country. I bet they contacted terror groups but did not formally train and travel to such entities, instead were sympathizers to the general anti-Russia, pro-separatist movement. Their country is run by a corrupt and brutal dictator who is apathetic to separatists. They probably felt frustrated by the utter lack of international interest in Chechnya and the Caucasus region: think about it, not one UN or NATO or ISAF equivalent has even been discussed for deployment there and yet since 2001 billions and trillions of EU and US money has been poured into fighting and "stabilizing" governments like Afghanistan and Iraq. Even Africa gets more regular sympathy - the Caucasus are treated like a mere internal issue for Russia even though it's on a scale akin to Dafur or even the Balkan wars in the 90s. They look to Libya and Syria and wonder why no one in the West has ever paid such attention to Dagestan or the Ossetia war. In fact thousands of American and ISAF troops literally fly over countries ravaged by Islamic conflicts as they go to deploy in Afghanistan. A bit surreal really - if 9/11 was carried out by terrorists affiliated with Chechen militants and not the Taliban, or if Bin Laden was in Dagestan and not the Afghan-Pakistan border, the war against terror could of easily started with American troops operating from Georgian bases into the troubled region all while Afghanistan carried on with Taliban rule and Northern Alliance insurgency. Since the brothers socialized and attended schools with Americans, it probably reinforced the fact that hardly any Americans, even educated college students, have even a slight sense of where they are from and what their people have gone through in the last couple of decades. That had to fuel some resentment and frustration.

I feel like this terror attack is a desperate and brutal cry for attention to the region and the perpetrators probably had an unclear and muddled plan by the time they carried it out. They wanted people to simply pay attention to that country and that region's overall conflicts, even if it comes out that they had a more specific manifesto that doesn't say that directly, I feel that they've been subconsciously aiming to do that. I dunno. Just a guess. We'll see how America handles it, especially as they watch Russia and vice-versa.
