pot>kettle. :-)

I don't think I'm harming anyone or anything by chasing rumors and making idle speculation. Well, except for my wattm-reputation. Which is neither here nor there.

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

How convenient for Russian government to have Chechen terrorists bomb US targets and get legitimization for Russian military operations in Chechnya. Not saying that Putin is behind this but it seems awfully convenient for him. Oh man, this is going to generate so many conspiracy theories.

I was wondering this myself. Or it's not. After all since the Chechen wars have ended and the region has been remarkably stable (just look at pictures of Grozy - it's completely rebuilt with skyscrapers and new parks). But this has all been at the expense of having a very corrupt and brutal government in place, with Ramzan_Kadyrov as the head. The human rights abuses are rampant even though the war has ended. He is Muslim and for independence but essentially focused on gaining power himself, so he is very much on good terms with Putin. Checyna's violence and turmoil has never quelled, just ebbed and flowed and at no point has the UN or a EU or US lead international response ever been formulated. It's literally been a CIS and Russian regional war in literal flyover countries on route for NATO on it's way to Afghanistan operations.

Maybe this was a brutal act of terror for nothing more than pure awareness of Chechnya and to put pressure on the Russian government and the current regime of the Chechen state?

Tsarnaev follows several pages devoted to Islam. He also lists one of his favorite songs as “Hey Sexy Lady” by Shaggy.

lol, Four Lions, truly.

I'll never understand radical Islam, what a bunch of hypocritical wankers

It's possible to be a Muslim and like Shaggy.

It's too early to say whether these attacks were religiously motivated, or whether these guys' interpretation of their religion could be called "radical". The Chechen conflict - if that is a motivating factor here - is about far more than just religion, and either way it's generally dangerous to speculate about the motives based simply on religious or ethnic affiliation.

Earlier on you seemed convinced that the totally innocent Indian-American guy was responsible... so perhaps you should rein it in a little until we know more.

Yes in fact the Chechen conflict is a an extremely complicated one in which both radical Islamist fighters, secular pro-independence fighters, and pro-Russian Chechens have all fought each other and Russia. Chechnya is just one of many insurgencies going on. An example of how much the violence and fighting changes tone and focus in often absurd manners is the fact that many Chechen fighters who fought against Russia in the mid-90s war switched sides and served in the Russian army, many of whom were deployed to Georgia during the 2008 South Ossetia war! Again, I stress that this has all been very little recognition from the Western media - only technocrats and policy experts regularly follow these wars.

Also I must mention that there has been a very recent upswing in conservative Islam being mandated in Grozy and Chechnya overall, again endorsed by the government there. The country has been Muslim majority but as mentioned earlier, the radical Islamist in the region are mostly fighters, and until very recently it's been a secular society and the wars against Russia more nationalistic in tone. I have no idea if this is relevant, and again it goes hand in hand with grievances many have with the Chechen government over it's brutality and corruption.

and the history of these conflicts goes back centuries. The Cossacks and Caucasus regions have always been rather autonomous...and the Soviets/Putin seriously fucked things up by allowing the ethnic conflict to build, forcing immigration and redistribution into previously fairly traditionalist/homogenized areas.

  Quote

In their long, violent struggle against the Kremlin, Chechen radicals have hit soft targets before. In 2010 two female suicide bombers from Dagestan blew up the Moscow metro, killing at least 40 people and injuring 100. A year later another suicide bomber struck Moscow’s Domodedovo airport; he killed 37 and wounded 180. There have been murderous attacks on a school in Beslan in 2004, where 334 hostages died, most of them children.

But the bombings of the Boston Marathon, allegedly perpetrated by two Chechen brothers, Dzokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, are something altogether new. It is so far unclear how significant is the trail that appears to lead from the mountains of the North Caucasus - the scene of a simmering ongoing insurgency - to the boulevards and suburban houses of north America.

After 18 years, two wars, and the loss of hundreds of thousands of civilian lives, the conflict in Chechnya and Russia’s southern backyard more generally has changed. From 1994-96 Boris Yeltsin fought a war against mainly secular Chechen separatists who wanted - like other ethnic republics after the collapse of the USSR - their own nationalist and constitutional state. In the period 1999-2004 Vladimir Putin - Yeltsin’s steely successor - fought a second Chechen war. The aim was to definitively crush Chechen separatism.

In recent years, however, the Kremlin and its regional proxies have been battling a different kind of enemy. This new generation of insurgents has an explicitly Islamist goal: to create a radical pan-Caucasian emirate ruled by Islamist law, a sort of Afghanistan under the Taliban. The movement’s leader, Doku Umarov, unveiled this ambitious vision in 2007. He vowed to liberate not only Russia’s Muslim North Caucausus but a large chunk of European Russia.

Umarov also suggested that devout Muslims should think internationally. His comments, later softened, said: “Today in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, and Palestine our brothers are fighting. Everyone who attacks Muslims wherever they are are our enemies, common enemies. Our enemy is not Russia only, but everyone who wages war against Islam and Muslims.”

This call to global jihad may perhaps offer a possible motive for an attack inside the US. The new generation of twenty-something rebels is also exploiting a powerful new weapon: the internet. The main Chechen rebel website,kavkazcenter.com, posts reports from the jihadi movement worldwide: from Syria, where Chechen diaspora fighters are battling government forces in Aleppo, from Pakistan, and from Turkey.

Over in the North Caucausus, meanwhile, the Kremlin is carrying out a brutal and rolling counter-insurgency campaign. Its focus is Dagestan, the neighbouring state to Chechnya, and now a hotbed of violent jihadist rebellion. Three weeks ago Umarov appealed to Chechen fighters abroad to come home to take part in the fight.

It's very much a parallel to the Balkan wars in the 90s - literally multiple wars and conflicts erupting when Yugoslavia dissolved.
