I was on the fence about whether I'd be getting a new console this generation, or whether I'd invest a little bit more in a super-swanky gaming PC. But this second-hand usage fee nonsense has made my decision for me. I don't need that in my life.

To be entirely fair, as the majority of PC games released by 'major' studios and publishers are on Steam, there's absolutely no way to get a second hand Steam game.

There are of course the indie PC games, which generally have no DRM and are cool like that. but the PC has had this kind of lock in for years.

Then again, there are obvious differences in the users. Console gamers are much much more likely to want to take their games over to their friends' places, and in my experience, more likely to sell their games after one playthrough.

it'll be interesting to see how MIcrosoft fare with this strategy.

I watched untill the part where the guy said they're still going to charge 5 bucks a month for Xbox Live. I guess it'll be either PS4 or PC for me...

Also the name is just stupid. I guess how many confused moms will be getting their children first generation Xbox's for christmas

I hear in Latin American countries, it will be called the "XBOX Juan" :emotawesomepm9:

The only reason i'll buy this console is to play Fifa 14 so i'm happy.

The TV thing could be nice as long as is in HD and we are able to record tv shows to watch them later and stuff, maybe they'll show live sports events like the garman football league in HD.

PS4 will have FIFA 14 (which admittedly, didn't impress (at least on XBOX1), and unlike the XBX1 and PS4 versions, the PC version will NOT use the "Ignite" engine.

I know it is all about the games, but what's up with the minimal bang & olufsen design?

Looks like a standard 90's cd player. I'm not too worried about the second hand games barrier they're throwing up, something for hackers to take care of.

I think they're going for the most generic, cheapest to manufacture design possible, to save on costs. I LOLed when they said "near silent operation" - perhaps it's because nobody will be playing it and it will collect dust like the Wii/Wii U?

Forgot to mention that there's no backwards compatibility with the 360. Hooray!

If that goes for the Xbox Live Arcade too then they've really fucked the dog.

But disregard all these good points.. I guess because I'm on the internet I'm just.. hating?

I don't understand this non-backwards compatibility - with the PS4 it makes sense, since they're switching processor architecture, etc. - but isn't the 360 basically a bog-standard PC, and so's this? I mean, it didn't take them long to get original XBOX games to run on the 360, so why not here? I guess they can go for emulation and make money off digital downloads of games people already own... essentially creating their own secondhand market, even though they won't allow consumers to purchase secondhand games. Real fair, guys.

Now, Microsoft might be playing the long game like Sony did this generation, and if they get Comcast and other cable providers to offer the box heavily subsidized... they might have a price advantage over Sony.

I think Microsoft just shot themselves in the face big time, and Sony will finally get out of Microsoft's shadow with PS4 again. The fact the console has to connect "at least once a day" and needs on-line activation is going to hurt a lot of people (people in the armed forces who play games overseas and don't have a persistent internet connection, etc.), not to mention the no used games policy.

Honestly, none of the videos they showed impressed me or screamed "next generation" to me - if someone told me the Madden and FIFA videos were PS3/360 versions, I'd totally believe it. Not impressive at all. At least with Sony they made some effort to make things look better than this generation.

Now's your chance, Sony! Strike while the beast is weakened!

Yeah, gotta call bs on the silent operation. There is no such thing as a silent computer if it has decent fans. Also, the xbox's have always looked like crap unless maybe the newest version of the 360 could be considered decent.

There will be new love from the ashes of us.

I'm sure most people wont give a fuck about this but i'm actually really impressed with new kinect. If this had been the first kinect they released people would be blown away beyond belief. It's incredible how quick people normalize new tech in their own minds.

The 360 was PowerPC(RISC) based, just like the PS3. It didn't have SPUs, but it was still a completely different set of machine code.

Emulation on both 360 and PS3 was spotty and best, and was even quickly deprecated on the PS3. Emulating 360/PS3 games is vastly more difficult problem because processor power has not increased as much in the past 8 years as it did between PS2->PS3.

The interesting thing is that the Xbox 1(original?) was actually an x86 chip, so it would be trivial for the Xbox One to run those games.

Oh, I thought it was x86 based, like the original XBOX was.

I like how the figure in the background at 1:05 is just glitching out, haha

It's amazing tech, definitely. But I don't see how it's going to translate to a better gaming experience.

The only reason I would be interested in getting an Xbox One right now would be if I could hook the Kinect 2 up to my pc. The idea of a Kinect that actually has enough resolution and low enough noise to be useful is super exciting.

Occulus Rift + Kinect 2 would be wicked.

Yeah, and I don't like the fact Microsoft is forcing it down the throats of the consumers - Kinect on 360 should have shown them it's not as useful as they think it is for gaming... oh, wait - that's it! It's not for gaming at all! The reason they're forcing Kinect is they want to innovate in the media centre control realm!

So, in short, the XBOX One is one big fucking remote control for your media centre. Fantastic!

First off, and this is to anyone who replied, i've never owned an xbox and doubt i'll be getting one. I'm not arguing in favour of the xbox or anything just in case you guys are getting the wrong end of the stick. I'm getting a couple of answers back here that are essentially "yeah but the xbox is still shit because...." or whatever. I'm just into watching what technology is doing full stop, as i'm sure most have noticed already. Starts and ends there.

@ JR if i wasn't so lazy i would have said in the original post that this update with much, much better latency will open up a bunch of gaming styles that just weren't possible on the original one. The original was limited beyond belief by the lag and should never have been released. Not only that but it's ability to track movement is at a completely different level. In most cases im sure people will still favour the traditional controllers but lets just see what happens over the next couple of years. This is way more useful than the previous version.

Having said all that i'm far more interested in what people will be doing with this outside of the xbox, Oculus rift being the obvious one.
