Less than a week! I can't listen to this track enough! I wake up in the middle of the night with it in my head. I love Aphex! I'm so excited. I've checked this god-4-saken website everyday for fucking YEARS with NO news and we're so close! Holy Shit! Oh my god! Anybody else feel like this everyday? Can't wait to hear that METZ track in HD glory! My speakers and headphones have no idea what they are about to be put through! Fanboy I am! BRING IT ALREADY!

Totally awesome interview! It's crazy how much he reminds me of and a few of my good friends. We are around the same age and from the same era so perhaps that has a bit to do with it

I'm sure a lot of people will be completely thrown for a loop by some of the things he says in that interview and others who think he's "taking the piss"...that's why I thought the part about - people thinking you're taking the piss but you're actually not was dead on!

One thing I've noticed for a while now that continually suprises me is how conformist, safe, unimaginative etc.. most younger people are in they're thinking these days compared to the people I grew up around who where loads more adventurous and downright radical at times. The fact that most won't even entertain the thought of pretty much any conspiracy....to me that is a million times more insane than ANY conspriacy!! The amount of criticism I've seen from this site alone about some of the things he's talked about only confirms what I mean.

O dear. And that's when people started to believe that creative imaginitive people should be into conspiracies...

Conspiracy subforum now, please! Puts the madness in containment! ;D

All the interviews are after his birthday when he did a load of drugs and got cosmic and didn't sleep for 3 days.

That is when conspiracy theories really become fun.

Not necessarily to do with "creative types".....more like people's unquestioning conformity to that which they are fed by the media on a daily basis and/or the fear of what people might think of them if they dare venture into certain territory's is truely amazing to me.

I guess I just expect the average person to be a bit more inquistive, aware etc.. and time and time again this proves not to be the case and quite often the opposite. Any conspiracy or belief in something (not yet) proven is immediate grounds for ridicule and personal attack!!

Haha yeah right on. wasn't really meaning to go off about the conspiracy thing like that, It was just tiny fragment in the interview kind of mentioned in passing as it were but interesting how people latch on to that bit and are instantly "dude is a total crackpot idiot kook" kind of attitude hah.

Exciting to see mention in recent interviews of the possible release of older - never before heard material...as well as the newer - more experimental stuff..

heh, or scary. To me it sounds like he's been digesting this sort of stuff for a while, and I think its downright ballsy to come right and say that you 'absolutely' think 9/11 was an inside job. It's practically a guaranteed way to make you a laughing stock here in the states. Any celebrity short of maybe Ed Asner and Robert Orci has been quasi blacklisted because of holding similar views.

There's probably some truth in that, thw head is a little clearer few days later but you still partially dont give a fuck, like when you've finally ditchedbthe scary but if an hangover and you're in the comfortable thank fuck zone, but probably not quite as 100 percent as you think that you are. Still this led to some stream if consciousness and open hearted interviews, so that's cool.

Well though, maybe he's going to be nice and open all the time now cause it duznt matr, it's all good.

I have two Tomita records which I purchased cos the record covers were awesome and they also had gear lists on the back ridden with synths and stuff.

They were dirt cheap and I was curious. I particularly like the cover for Kosmos, with the guy in the jacket and hat staring at this bombardment of psychedelic imagery, with his hands on his hips. haha.

I swear I called this a while back, as I is essentially noodling around on a pad, so something you could do before you've mastered your craft. But I can't find a citation, so maybe I didn't mention it online anywhere...

At any rate, Surfing on Sine Waves was written between '86 and '89, so it didn't take him too long to work out how to make toneless purely beat driven music, out of tune music (listen to the organ in Bradley's Robot A2, for instance), and music that's sort of in key but doesn't really have chords, all in single sections with various instruments coming and going.

It's the Melodies From Mars and Hangable Auto Bulb era when he really started learning how to make melodic music with sections, but even before then he was great at making patches and the like. You can see the same sort of path with Orbital, who took a while to make music that was consistently in tune. Dance music doesn't really require its practitioners to be musicians as such, which is what makes it so welcoming to newcomers. :) What was so good about James back then was largely that he sampled his own eccentric sounds, and paired those with good, albeit structurally limited, music.

That was a lucky find, having Snowflakes Are Dancing before getting into music. Not a bad introduction. I'd really recommend his version of The Planets too.

Equipment lists in sleeve notes are pretty common in some electronic music circles. You should check out Synth Music Direct some time, they have a bunch of albums by musicians who are really proud of the equipment they use. :)

There's a couple of artists that put a list of their equipment on their releases, one being Philippe Laurent:

936182_10151517085572946_1127461971_n.jp

Check out Pilippe Laurent, one of the weirder artists to come out of synthpop. Crazy French electronic music very much in the same vein as people like Jean-Jacques Perrey (I think I hear a 303 in this 1984 song)

But I digress.

I think RDJ listing his equipment is a nice hommage to those artists.
