Bit late to the party, well very late indeed! But I watched Dune 1 the other week and it blew my mind. Wowzers.

Why oh why have I been sleeping so long on this! Dune 2 incoming soon (I have to be in the right frame of mind for epic Sci Fi)

Hopefully they will rerun it at Waterloo IMax, I've signed up for updates so hopefully get some good news soon.

wasn't it already ruined though? even just the clips from that imdb video of all the other things other than the denis V. movies all look well ruined.. i haven't seen any of those other films/series.. just the lynch and villenueve movies.

naw, Villeneuve's going to quit directing them after Messiah, and i'll be very surprised if any producers will touch the main story post Messiah. Children of Dune could be done but gets a bit weird and doesn't have enough 'normie' meat to it for them to do it as a 4th movie, i'd think. who knows tho.

the prequel series looks like it might be interesting at least? maybe some other non-main Dune stuff could be cool but they'd have to keep Brian Hebert mostly/entirely out of it 'cause he's trash

I mean I hope you're right but...well corporate greed an all.

Though I do hope they make God Emperor of Dune. SOmeone on here (maybe even you @auxien?) described it so perfectly (i'm paraphrasing here) - a giant worm sat alone, reciting his thoughts and hallucinations to be recorded in time immemorial.

Well I dunno, trailer looks alright and they could do some great world building with the airtime a series offers.

At least, stylistically, it looks like the recent films, so im cautiously optimistic.

first episode was kinda lame.. normie vibes. the world building they're doing is just kinda weak.. seems very standard fantasy soap opera with some little twists that don't really sink their teeth in.. not for me anyways.. i'll probably give it a couple episodes or save it for when i'm feeling shitty and need 2 hours of shit tv.

it could have the alternate title of "witch karate school"

i mean, it is a TV show...but i thought it was a pretty strong start. soap opera, yeah, i mean, it's Dune. lots of political plays, personal setups, horrible actions for greater goods, personal vendettas, whatever, yeah. it's a drama, in the space future with kewl ships. the drama gets condensed heavily for the movie, but the original books are lots and lots of just political/familial/etc. types of drama & such.

the infodump intro went a little too much, the whole episode (like, almost the length of a movie...) had some sorta TV feel moments, but overall cinematics, acting, set, effects, spacey stuff all looked/felt really good. that bad guy soldier dude, was one of the main guys in Raised by Wolves & i'm not sure if that's good. he wasn't bad but he went over the top as it definitely fit that series, but it looks like he's leaning hard on that vibe for this too...

from the perspective of a fan of the original books, i'm sad they're going to basically 'everything in the universe is almost exactly like it is in the Dune books* even tho we're only 30 years past the Butlerian Jihad & 10k years before Paul Atreides' ...i thought we were going to get to see all the cool shit getting started, not jump in with it 90% cooked. not surprised by this but it's not a huge issue.

lol at witch karate school tho...not wrong, not wrong....

*i'm ignoring all the Brian Hebert/Kevin J. Anderson books, as everyone should

Yeah but what did you expect, the films and series could never be as abstract as the books. It needs to be palatable for the masses of course!

"witch karate school"  sounds cool

I havent seen Dune Prophecy but I notice its developed by Diane Ademu-John and Alison Schapker, showrunner is Alison Schapker, there's at least one female writer on each episode, director of first episode was female (yet to hear about the other episodes) and obviously the cast is largely female. This is a good thing and as the Guardian says, would have been unthinkable even 10 years ago. Most TV production is still a sausage fest. Its still relatively rare to find shows where both the writer and director are female.

I keep checking Waterloo iMax for Dune 1&2 reruns. Unfortunately they had a showing last week but couldn't make it, fingers crossed for next time. Have to see these on the big screen.

Guess I'll have to hit the high seas as I refuse to get another streaming service. reports so far here sound at least interesting.

i get it. .i mean.. i know it's TV. .HBO.. etc.. i found the emperor a bit too casual. also, the 'soldier' guy who is somehow infected with technology or whatever that is.. he was in "raised by wolves" and it's hard for me not to think he's playing a very similar character suffering similarly. raised by wolves is the weirdest syfy thing i've seen i think. .and parts of it are quite bad but some of it is kind of amazing and pure fantasy abstract flying snake weirdness... anyway.. so, seeing that guy.. just kind of looped me a little w/the casting choices made.. since some of them are very familiar faces plugged in to different royal families.

i do think 'witch karate school' would be a nice anime take on Dune Prophecy.. or just a different thing for absolute graphic novel adaptation type fun.

i agree about the world building intro.. and some of the narration while the witches are practicing their 'weirding ways' hand to hand combat was particularly just kind of hokey. there's something about it that just lacks edge or formality.. and maybe that's intentional since everything is not fully formed into what it will become.. so in some way it makes sense that it's got a little more casual chatty vibe at times..

that nightclub scene though.. ugh.. syfy trope galore.. but i'm curious what twists they build in to up the drama with long term consequences etc...
