first episode was kinda lame.. normie vibes. the world building they're doing is just kinda weak.. seems very standard fantasy soap opera with some little twists that don't really sink their teeth in.. not for me anyways.. i'll probably give it a couple episodes or save it for when i'm feeling shitty and need 2 hours of shit tv.

First episode was a bit of a hot mess. Could go either way - awesome or totally and utterly shit.

The series is based on these abominations as much as it is the originals. So I’m think it will probably end up totally and utterly shit. Maybe I’m just being pessimistic.

Yeah I was maybe being a bit harsh on it saying it was a hot mess. There was lots to enjoy about the first episode, but some things definitely looked like they were rushed in there to make a deadline. Hopefully some of those things will get explained moving forward.

Very run off the mill sci fi so far. The overdramatic acting is off putting to me. The nightclub scene was god awful. I don't understand how director's always think that that bland 4x4 library techno they always play in scenes like that is peak futuristic music. I hate it!!!

Other than that I'm curious to see where the series goes. Miffed by the fact that there are only 6 episodes though. I'm watching the second one right now.

Edit: oh brother that sex scene in the second one, oh my god. It made me shiver with cringe

that scene was very GoT.  2nd episode was better than the 1st. the memory palace of horrors for the little witch in training was interestingly done with a nice sound design moment or two but overall it seems really one dimensional in a way.. i guess complications will emerge but they basically made a magic boogey man to oppose the sisterhood.. yada yada yada...

It was so watmm from a normy perspective. This is what techno is. Techno is dark and sexy and cool and hot and sci fi.

Mannn this dude is such a bad actor. One of the reasons I had to stop watching Raised by Wolves. I threw up my hands when he appeared. Then the night club scene happened and I had to check out.

I disliked the 2nd one more than the first actually. I've always hated GoT so they aren't winning any points with that either.

But they are technically not witches but telekinetic telepaths, right?

“Telekinetic Telepaths karate School” is too long of a title. Witch Karate School it is.

i really want to like this but as i thought...sci fi has been back burned and fantasy put right up front

I know right, the epsiode felt almost medieval. The story was interesting but other than that im still not impressed by the overall show

for a TV series i thought it was quite enjoyable. there's an actual story in these first 3 episodes. don't mind the techno sex scenes either. i'm gonna stick around a bit and see where it goes.

good how they kept the vileneuve vibes. as opposed to the movies not every dialogue seemed like a shouting contest. the story kept me on my toes. guess the actual books must be good. and thankfully, it's not like with GoT where half of the story hasn't even been written yet. so it's not that the final seasons will be utter garbage (like GoT).

Alert: completely naive on the actual herbert books. and i guess it's better that way.

i liked the 3rd episode better.. so maybe it'll keep my interest. it's decent storytelling in that one. more so than the previous. the backstory is interesting. i'm sure they'll tease that out more and more.

it did feel medieval to me as well... but that's the forest/hunting/dudes around the camp fire hunting ritual vibe too.

side note, i'd like my own spice chamber for healing.

The backstory was ok. To me the present time is more interesting. There’s all kinds of political tensions where id like to know what will happen (again, im naive on the actual books - that helps). The backstory gives a bit of color to the present. But at points im wondering whether it wouldn’t be better to leave stuff unknown. The first episode was enough to tell valya is the boss. No need to know more backstory. It’s more exciting to see her handling a situation where she cant just “jedi-mind trick” herself out of a conflict (dent). That creates more interest than to see an entire backstory on valya and tula. It would have been just fine if they said they’re sisters who fled their home. And spend more time on events in the present. Just to see the plotting and manipulating of the various factions. The galaxy is big enough to build an entire story around that alone.

Kinda like GoT, I guess. That’s one of the good things about GoT, imo. It doesn’t dwell on backstory (even though it’s there) and mostly stays in present events. such that it keeps you on the edge of your seat. What’s going to happen next?

With backstories there rarely is a “next”. You’re watching the past while the present is on hold. So, nothing is happening and you’re spoonfed some information about characters from the present. There can be a pay off, but often it feels like filler.

In Dune im still on the fence about this. It helps to understand the characters. But endless backstories will become jarring. Especially while you could also achieve it in the present.

GoT did backstory but usually it was in present time w/one character telling a story to another... about how shit got the way it is. it worked well w/their cast and writing. often quite good at that sort of thing and revealing the bits that way.
