RIP to WATMM Discussion thread

Recommended Posts

Joyrex...I feel like you are ignoring me...I think this is all just a big misunderstanding because of the forum and you can't tell how I am feeling when I am posting. I was just trying to check in on you to make sure you are okay, just like everyone else in the group. We should meet up and get back on track...? Let us know that U R okay? OK? LOL u kno wut I mean... You aren't mad at me tho, right? I just want WATMM to be da bomb for U.. I always try to put a lot of hard work into our shitposting. I tell you that your themes look smooth, even when I find a badger. I react to your posts, and I check your download section after a server upgrade to keep you lush and limber, I make you tracks and I put in all this for work us so I can enjoy a smile on your face at the end of the day.

Who were some of the most surprising VIP members? it can be revealed now.
A friend long ago said one of the guitarists from Alexisonfire was on here. thats all I got.

Not sure about members, but both the FSOL boys have lurked in the past.

Generally sharing sentiments with everyone else. I do really get the desire to just wipe the lot and move on, that desire for a clean slate that won't be quenched until you've done it. I've done the same myself with smaller things in the past, sometimes you just gotta do it. But at the same time, I do feel the downplaying ("it's an internet forum" is the kind of dismissal you'd hear 20 years ago, not in 2025 when internet connectivity between people is at the core of human politics, news, socialising, creativity and leisure for most western countries) is a bit insulting. My personal recommendation would be taking over the place and renaming it. It wouldn't be WATMM anymore, but the history and community would remain. But I get it, that clean slate is like an intrusive thought that won't stop nagging.

Anyway I'm fucking skint but will happily help out in setting up the FSOL Subforum And Wiki on We Are The Noise Creators if required.

I totally respect Joyrex wanting to move on after 25 years. he put a lot of work into this place. but what i don't respect is the "i'm going to shut this place down no matter what & no one else can carry the torch" attitude. Joyrex, WATMM hasn't been a personal site for your personal projects & writings, it is the collected content of a lot of people from all over the world who have been contributing over an extended period of time. I don't think you should be so cavalier about shutting down something like that.

i can say with confidence that if you try to archive or move the 25 years of content here, there is a 100% chance that multiple things will get broken. there is so much media, embeds, and links here that it is unavoidable. not to mention all of the external sites that link back to this place & to specific posts here. that will all get broken if the domain name changes or things get moved somewhere else. it will end up as just more bit rot & lost history on the internet and that would be a big shame.

Joyrex, if you've got a forum that works well, has 25 years of content, and has been and continues to be financially self-sufficient for the past 12 years running, that's solid gold! you can't just torch something like that based on your personal feelings. there are other people involved here & their feelings should be taken into account as well. if you want to move on that's totally understandable, but you've got a bunch of mods here that are willing to step up & take over & they have a lot of love for the forum & are not going to just run it into the ground. please hand the keys over to them. it would just make everything so much better and easier. you can even have legal documentation drawn up regarding the ownership change making it clear that the new owner(s) have full responsibility for the existing content & are responsible for any moderation moving forward if that's something you worry about.

i can understand someone not wanting to see their thing tarnished or ruined after they move on from it, but seeing as this is a public forum it's not really 'your thing' after a certain point, is it? it is a public meeting place for others and this is something that i feel should be respected.

Global Goon used to post here a lot. He even sent a bunch of us advance copies of Family Glue.

I remember that Skrillex was a member, posted a video of him dancing to Girl/Boy song or something like that way before achieving success. Maybe it's just an urban legend tho!

Ffs I would've taken my whole family out for a meal to celebrate my big Watmm promotion if I knew the future of the site is assured. As it stands now I'm not even going to tell my wife about this. What's the point.Screenshot_20250203-1915302.thumb.png.5c3593d09feea779ee03d85ce33c6b68.png

I remember years ago some user using "well good" in a sentence and someone else responding "'well good!'? where did you learn English?!"

- "England"

proper lol

Stumbled upon this remark from JR on Xltronic's continued survival

If anything, it's a testament to the users supporting it financially to keep it going...

I actually feel pretty bad he's getting so heavily critiqued over this. Obviously I get why and to some extent I agree, but still...

Lmao "stress"

Regarding the archiving: valuable material that is easy to archive and transfer to the new site would be the download section but I don't know whether Joyrex was exclusively allowed to upload them or not? Not sure of the legal status regarding these files. I will back them all up just to be sure.

I have to say, as upsetting as this whole incident has been, I have enjoyed this spirit of camaraderie and community that has come up as we all simultaneously grieve and celebrate this place. The posting blitz that has happened across the site has been a very entertaining way to spend my first bout of COVID as I've just been lying around anyway lol. Thanks everyone. This place rules

True. It actually feels a lot like the old days, lately… minus the mspaints and shops.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue… and dissociating about how everything good in this world is being put through the shredder.

all jokes aside, I know I may not be as active a contributor here, but this place has been very special to me for the past 12-13 years.
long before I officially joined and started posting this place was a repository of knowledge that I would regularly search the old threads to better inform myself.

I can thank joyrex for the years of time and effort he put in. And I can respect joyrex’s decision to want to cut ties with the forum and go on with his life.
but to the day I die I will never understand/appreciate/respect the decision to blow the whole thing up in lieu of passing the torch to established mods.
being part of the collective experience of the AAA thread. Listening in real-time with everyone during the original AE NTS broadcast, the very recent Ae BBC sessions and their collective listenings. Moving away from Autechre, experiencing the Tomorrows Harvest campaign as it unfolded (separate from how Twoism experienced it), or even the fact that these threads have been just as big a part of the sample spotting for BoC tracks… and all the references to this on bocpages will be dead links.

the fact Sean showed up to voice his level-headed sadness about this end, and support for whatever comes next, speaks volumes of the cultural relevance of this place.

for joyrex to say we will all quickly forget about this place is such horseshit and speaks to someone so out of touch with reality. you want to cut ties, fine. Bye. Thank you for all you have done, and fuck you for all you are doing.

I await whatever the other mods might generate in the future, and I mourn the decades of rich information that will be lost and is being set ablaze

@Joyrex and everyone else whose been here since the joyrex.com days: thank you for your company, feedback on music and year-end lists. This forum has been a part of my life since I was like 14 or 15.

But especially thanks to Joyrex, I hope you can look back on what you contributed to the internet with pride.

Hope I'll see you all on whatever the forum's successor ends up being.
