WATMM helped me through my divorce a couple years ago - probably the worst period of my life, was suicidal, etc.  I didn't have many people to talk to about it in the real world and everyone here was super supportive and gave thoughts and comments.  So this place will definitely hold a special place in my heart.  It gave me back a bit of faith in humanity, strangers all over the world came to my aid when they had no real reason to.

I will be sad to see it go.

I remember it like yesterday, It was a very sad read and I think you are really brave to open up about your situation like that to us stranger. I hope u doing well

“Ah, what is the nature of human creations if not fleeting and fragile, much like human life itself? A forum such as this is nothing more than the temporary fruit of the will, which constantly strives for expression, gathering, and sharing that which seems worthy of attention. Yet everything that has come into being is destined for ruin. Transience is the rule of this world, and every human community, no matter how harmonious, carries within it the seed of its own end. However, what must be observed is the tireless will of these members to resist the end and find ways for the community to endure. This will, as the fundamental force that drives the entire universe, never rests; one forum may be extinguished, but a new platform, a new form of connection, is born. In art, including that electronic music we value, humanity briefly finds solace from its eternal suffering. Yet even art cannot alter the nature of the world; it can only offer an escape from it. Therefore, if the forum must vanish, let this not dishearten us. Our will to remain connected will be enough to shape a new world, even if only a temporary one. For anything that lasts longer than a moment is already an exception in the realm of transience.”

Gah, the more I think about losing this place the worse it really is... I've been coming here since I was 22 so yeah, essentially half my existence now. I hope we can figure something out. Will keep checking in and help in whatever way I can.

i remember the posts you shared. good to hear from you.

edit: also, just to add. .there's some great perspectives here in general. the political stuff can go up its arse some times as is the usual way things can go on forums but i've found so much good info shared from people who have a different mindset because their experiences, families, cultural upbringing etc.. so, things like ukraine, china, israel etc those topics are full of interesting challenging thoughtful posts and also some that really get into the who/what/why type histories that are so relevant to understanding wtf is going on. being american w/typical american education it's sometimes humbling to realize there's big holes in my education about some things or simply, people who have direct experience with people/places/events and are good at explaining those things w/o being dicks about it 🙂

also, hard to imagine the Ae live set reconstruction, by some fucking absolute legends, happening w/o watmm being a place.

meanwhile over at the lines forum, they're having conversations about whether to ban "AI content" becuase it's hurting people's feelings. Currently asking to get my account deleted from that place. I feel like WATMM struck a really great balance in tolerating opinions, snark and some general insanity without (for the most part) going to far into some weird freedumb ideological territory.  It seems like the rest of the internet is either a right-wing cryptofacist haven or a bunch of whiny dweebs spending their entire lives trying to regulate other people's thoughts. sad state of affairs

Currently stuck in Discord music groups chatting with teenagers.

Im happy seeing a new generation of kids getting into Ae,BoC and Aphex etc but I also feel a little bit lonely in there.
That place is more like a get to know people better, writing down your thoughts as fast as u can and get a reaction kind of.

Here on watmm it is way more chill and straight to the point.

Can I get an export/archive of all my posts based on GDPR? I have been using WATMM in a personal/individual capacity, so I should be able to download all of my data somewhere, somehow. Not that I will resort to any legal hijinxery, but that would be a nice option, because this place is like a diary that does dialogue, and some of the writing's pretty good, too, and I'd like to have them for posterity.

I looked into that for EU members as I had the same thought, I’m not sure that posts fall under the definition of personal data in the GDPR.

As well, I think it wouldn’t apply to posts made by you as per Chapter 1, Article 2, sub 2(c):

  Quote

This Regulation does not apply to the processing of personal data:

(c) by a natural person in the course of a purely personal or household activity;

yeah discord is particularly bad when you're trying to find communities with the same interests as you. mainly because they're literally all just dumb teenagers

I can't get my head around this?  It can't be true!

I'd help run a rebranded and/or de-@Joyrex-ed WATMM, with whatever conditions Joyrex would require to secure some form of continuation without his involvement.

@Sean Ae pls

(and of course eternal thanks to @Joyrex for running the show all these years -- this place is/was something really special)

this is really sad. i was never a very active user, but watmm was there for me since the early 00s.

I would really like to donate as much as needed, but seems joyrex made his decision, which i can understand.

Hopefully there will be at least something after watmm. I don't know of any other site/forum, which comes close.

Love you all.

for some reason, I kind of reread joyrex's pinned post in Gru voice and suddenly the whole thing became freaking hilarious. minions crying "boohohoo autechre! le pucci!!", angrily saying "toka!", and all that jazz

earlier i managed to dig up Alcofribas' legendary Oversteps review so i could drop it in the requiem tracks thread because it deserved a mention. right now the original 12+ year old link still works and i can share this moment of glory with fellow watmmers.

and it's even more awesome because alco is still here! literally today i was arguing with him in the boc subforum about obscure gear from the 70s.

how can i live without a place that oozes watmm vibes at every turn :cattears:
