RIP to WATMM Discussion thread

Recommended Posts

JR received death threats from a certain nazi billionaire after we openly discussed blocking twitter links here, now he has to shut it all down for the safety of his family.

Or at least that's the only reasonable explanation I can think of

Is there any way of archiving all the threads in a browsable/readable formats? I'm honestly really worried about the wealth of information being potentially lost forever, not least of all the Dank Memes thread.

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

If you don't want to be associated with silly little idm men then don't create and maintain a silly little idm website for 26 years.

Wouldn't the Wayback machine have it, if all else fails?

Dunno if they would have everything, could be tricky with threads with lots of pages. It's also really slow to browse and not searchable. And stuff sometimes disappears too... A database dump would really be the way to go IMHO.

Re the archive project, I wouldn't mind throwing my personal post history into the abyss, images and everyone's EKT music links are dead anyway, but there are legends out there that shouldn't die...

Damn, McGriff's thread on how to create a fart chamber that could hold and preserve a fart indefinitely...  I suggested neutron star degenerate material and I still believe that dream.

Damn. I can't believe what I'm reading. This place was HOME for a long time in my life. I'm confident it will live on in some capacity somewhere though. I'm going to have to keep checking back to see where things end up. Thank you all for some sweet memories.

hi folks,

given the planned closing of WATMM I think it'd be cool to do some interviews with members of this forum & create a lil podcast to commemorate it.

If you're interested, email me at greystarsound@gmail.com

it would be for my "Braindance News" project 🙂

thanks

Do you have a bowl of only blue peanut M&Ms? My rider specifically requires a bowl of only blue peanut M&Ms.

Wow... thanks for everyone sharing their thoughts and feelings.

While I appreciate your sentiments to carry on, I don't think I conveyed well my intent in wanting to shut down WATMM.

I don't want the site to continue on, in any form - I know a lot of people get a lot of benefit from it, but I do not want it continuing and going in a direction I would not agree with had I continued to administer the site.

Of course, I can't stop anyone from doing their own thing, but for me personally, I think it's time for We Are The Music Makers/WATMM to end.

I would respectfully ask that whatever you want to do, please don't associate it with WATMM/me or make any reference/connection to me. WATMM had it's time, it's place. Time to move on. There's been some good suggestions of alternate names and ideas, so I encourage you to go with that.

Also, June 3rd might have been a bit optimistic of me - right now we've got enough to cover February's hosting, and depending on if the Google AdSense gets over 100 USD for a payout (Google won't pay out until the ad revenue hits 100 USD), we might make it to April. If that is in danger of happening, I'll let you all know, but please don't go sending money via PayPal right now - not only will that cause me more work (refunding any overages), but it puts a potential tax burden on me (I know real life stuff).

Word.  makes sense.  You could just remove yourself from it - like not be active.  That is what I ended up doing - the community [EDIT: the community that I was admin of and then left is] of now 27-thousand people still exchange; but it's on a free platform and has nothing to do with my bank account.   For what it's worth - they dealt with more political bullshit like what someone's skin color was and what style of genitalia or whether or not their personal codex/lore was outweighed the idea of respecting eachother's privacy which was generally insulting in a sphere that should be elevated above corporeal existence but obv my opinion there is showing.

If I was literally paying for it myself the entire time then I'd feel entitled to pull the plug, sure.

If there are people who wanted to archive it - I'd work with them in at least discussing it.  I get the whole breaking up and burning the love letters though, and yes that is partially teasing.

Also - people offering money:  They'd be offering to pay the services, not you, so the whole tax thing or the idea of being complicated in that regard could be solved just by updating the destination the money is sent to.

I'm honestly not big on forums in general; I think they're the model-T of communication vehicles; but I absolutely fucking hate reddit and discourse is basically the mcdonald's play-area, it's IRC #teenchat sonified for fuck's sakes.  However, if the community is actually dope then of course the interactions and the groups are, so I can't say a discord server that mirrors these folks would be bad at all.  The text-based interchange wouldn't be as strong as a forum though (discord).  Discourse itself looked pretty darn clean and I would assume is the best destination.

Also, for those reading, sorry that I use swear-words and hyperbolic color to describe things that are borderline traumatizing for me.  Oh and sorry for 'reaching' by describing some online interactions as being traumatizing, unless you agree that this stuff (everything online) is a real big deal cuz it sure is.  joke.  but the power of the self and the weight of ones own psychology is as heavy as it can make itself, which is as beautifully powerful and horrific as the universe iteslf.  whoops there I go with all that <redcated from idiocracy> talk again.  don't worry scro, my ### is ### and she's living a really kickass life.

Anyways man @Joyrex serious props to you for involving yourself in a project for 2.5+ decades and knowing how to keep things classy with gracefully allowing something to have a sunset.  I really mean that and genuine props to you.  cheers man
