RIP to WATMM Discussion thread

Recommended Posts

We'll, this is just disgusting. Just popping in and taking a big steaming dump on us all. Thanks papa. God bless you.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

So I was going to hold off on this until after the weekend, but given advanced timelines.... Some of the moderators have been discussing things behind the scenes. We would like to continue this community in a different venue but what that is we haven't decided yet. From purely my perspective the three frontrunners are a phpBB/invisionboard, discourse.org, or Lemmy. We would ask that before the community splinters, give us a couple of days to work through some logistics. I also welcome other serious options in DM. Edit: do keep in mind I'm in Japan so time zones will impact when I respond - it's 3:30 AM here now so I'm signing off for the night.

While I am of course sad that WATMM is going to go dark (having been here since the joyrex.com days), and understanding that this community means a great deal to a lot of people, I think we should respect joyrex's wishes and plans for the site he started all those years ago. No thing is permanent, but the essence and soul of the WATMM community is eternal.

Sounds great, thanks mods 👍

Dad was fine with us living in his basement smoking weed and listening to the sounds of dying machines well into our 30's. While it's a bit weird to suddenly be like "move out", I also get it.

This place has changed my life in more ways than any single other thing. I matured from an autistic loner nerd into a slightly less autistic loner adult since I joined. I learned how to make music on here. I very nearly moved overseas because of an old relationship that started on here (still have the old work visa!). I avoided making that disastrous mistake due to a one in a million coincidence involving a different, totally incredible person from here. I found almost all of the music that is core to who I am on here, and this was my go to place to nerd out when new stuff came around because nobody else gave a fuck.

Whether it carries on in some form or not, it's a sad day indeed. I'll go along to wherever this community settles next and thank Papa for the colossal impact he has unknowingly had on the trajectory of my life, even if the way he's pulling the plug feels a bit weird.

Also can we agree to keep our avatars wherever we go? I don't know any of your names, just those random avatars.

Really hope there will be an archive and that somehow it preserves the titles from youtube embeds. The years and years of recs would really be a waste if it disappeared.

Wouldn't the Wayback machine have it, if all else fails?

One further thing - we do plan to be as transparent as possible about this so everybody will have the opportunity to provide input, but more importantly so that when the change happens we reach the largest amount of community members.

the argument for closing this site down is a bit selfish, but it’s his right as the owner and steward of it for its entire existence. it will leave a bitter taste in many’s mouths to shut it all down, there’s a lot of history here that would be lost, but i understand there’s reasons even for that (go digging through through old random threads if you don’t believe me…)

my take is that handing it off to a trusted group of mods would be the ideal course, but that could get technically dicey or time consuming, so i get it. no one would look at the site in 5 years if it went south and blame Joyrex: most aren’t that stupid. one person isn’t to praise or to blame, but here he holds most of the cards…

a clean break is fine, id say let’s all just start archive.org-ing the whole site for now. i believe a large chunk of the Dank Memes thread has been already….

good on the group working towards something. i’ll be glad to support it in any way i can.

In all seriousness, I do want to thank @Joyrex for all that he has done with this forum and all that he has helped contribute to our weird little world of "electronic" music. I think my first order of business here was private messaging him and subsequently sending him some cash through the mail (I didn't have PayPal at the time) for some Boards of Canada stickers that I wanted to put on my first car. This would've been the summer before my senior year of high school, just about 18 years ago. I've had some great discussions here, and the AAA thread, the Caustic Window Kickstarter, the Tomorrow's Harvest promotional campaign, and the WATMM meetup before Ae in Boston 2015 were some particularly fun highlights/successes.

I definitely see both sides of the coin here: wanting to just be done with it and not wanting the WATMM/Joyrex name to be sullied under someone else's watch, but I also hope that the information here could be archived somehow, and that perhaps a new forum or something can come out of this for those of us who are hoping for some little place of solitude on this hellhole we call the internet.

Cheers to you @Joyrex, "all end" so to speak

who deleted my post? I still have warning points left I can say whatever the fuck I want... fuck this shit... what the fuck is happening? are we in north korea? why the fuck you acting like that Joysex? people say they understand but it's baloney they're just being polite, you're being shitty af... oh I don't want my name associated with a bunch of losers who like tits? ffs grow up... first thing I'm gonna do in the new forum is start a thread just for ppl to talk shit behind your back... and make sure mods block your ip...

joyrex worked hard to make watmm what it is, harder than anyone on watmm.  nobody would deny this.  but collectively, all of the posters of watmm together put a lot more time and effort into it.  it would be nothing without the collective users.  but now the private property owner under our centralized internet structure decides it's time to shut it all down because it imposes some hassles at tax day and he doesn't want to transfer a few accounts.  it spits in the face of everyone who has ever posted here.

and this is not a new occurrence.  all across the internet forums such as this have been shutting down over the decades, and this is rapidly accelerating as monopolies consolidate their hold on the infrastructure of the internet.

there are two main scenarios:

-the community itself chooses to migrate somewhere else.  this is amicable and understandable as people move on, the community follows them

-the community itself wants to stay, but the owner of the website wants to shut it down because of the hassles of being a webmaster, or due to a lack of profit

this latter case is the biggest shame, and it typically comes from private corporations, not individuals.  generally when a forum is shut down without the community's consent, it's a big drama filled event, and the person shutting it down against the user's will is considered "abusive" to that community, and they are doing it dirty to say the least.  sometimes there are successful power struggles where admin privileges are wrested from the hands of the malicious party, but sometimes their pride gets in the way and it doesn't happen

that's just how it is and this is one of the more shameful cases, there is no amicability here, let's just be realistic

Thanks to the mods, you’re doing the lord’s work, also thanks to @dr lopez for expressing what a lot of us are feeling right now. And Joyrex… not cool dude, not cool.

I like the name Lemmy. Probably because it sounds like Limmy.

To keep it real and analog, I'm gonna start posting to WATMM by writing my posts in fountain pen on hemp paper, putting them in bottles, and throwing them into the ocean.

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

but these so said hassles of being a webmaster can be transfered to someone willing to take care of them... wtf is going on?

hi folks,

given the planned closing of WATMM I think it'd be cool to do some interviews with members of this forum & create a lil podcast to commemorate it.

If you're interested, email me at greystarsound@gmail.com

it would be for my "Braindance News" project 🙂

thanks
