Yeah yeah, copyrighted stuff and that.

I meant with original music of course. Think a few of us wouldn't mind patching up a goodbye song for WATMM until June. Just an idea :boc:

VA - Farewell WATMM Compilation + bonus unreleased tracks given by our fellow feature artists. Ohh boy...

I'd sure dust of my gear for a final tribute album.

Most IDM 2025, killing beloved website

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

after all but 18 years this place really felt like home.

i will miss you lot.

stay safe (and lush) wherever you are.

see ya in the next one.

I’d say maybe 4-6 weeks out from June 3, Joyrex, or someone should send out a press release to sites like Warp, Planet Mu, Quietus, even Pitchfork or the like, @Joyrex deserves some recognition for his 26 years of service, upgrades, and helping get the Caustic Window LP released. 🥇 Maybe see if a few of the features artists would send him a “well done”, papa deserves it. Would Richard chime in, seeing as this entire forum was spawned from his song title? 🤞

Positive Metal Attitude

I think I've gone from being a bit sad to a little pissed off. I respect Joyrex wants to give it up, but I really don't want this place to just disappear into the ether. The famous saying is true, you don't know what you've got until you lose it. There has to be a way to save it! But I guess ignorance is bliss as I have zero idea of what a ball ache it must be to run watmm.

Hey Oh Great Man Of Planet Earth Mr Squarepusher can you please release the fucking Rome Track because if there has been one track/album I've wanted to talk about on watmm it's that one!!!!'

for what seems like an eternity

I've grown to really like watmm as one of the last vestiges of the "old" internet that I regularly visit. Social media has become so incredibly terrible that I really come to appreciate old-school forums of mostly-good people and the communities they foster, instead of seeing a feed of algorithmically displayed content.

If it comes down to it I'd be happy to help run a replacement community. (maybe not so much the moderating part but the server Admin part...). Something modern, low-maintenance. Maybe discourse? Forums are not my particular area of expertise but I know my way around infra and running sites/software.

I totally understand Joyrex not wanting to do this for any more than 26 years

Can we scrape and archive all the discussions off somewhere?

Can we agree on a new place to gather, e.g. Fred's forum?

Damn. I can't say much more here that hasn't already been said, but what a run. At a time where I want to get further and further away from the modern 'internet experience', particularly social media where vultures, parasites, divorced real estate moguls turned angel AI investors, etc. are all benefiting at the expense of humanity's collective mental health collapse, places like WATMM make me year for the simpler times. Just nerding out about tunes with a bunch of like minded people.

Thanks for all the great, and weird, conversations around the music we love. Grateful for all the cool people here and this place being a fortress of solitude during tough times. WATMM magnified my already off the charts obsession with IDM music (amongst other genres), I don't imagine anything will ever fill the void this place leaves when it's gone.

Peace and love, hopefully we get a good run of releases to geek out over these remaining months. Pouring one out right now by listening to Confield.

Ok 5 pages now. Brass tacks.

There is no credible reason beyond simple hubris for Joyrex NOT to pass this active and beloved site on to a new caretaker, individual or collective or otherwise.

will let him respond to this ofc, since I agree the board could certainly keep on going. I know he posted something a long time ago whenever he outlawed nudez and all that about being able to reference this site professionally, he didn't want some potential employer or client to come on here and see all the porn or what not. I know we're all much more mature now and it wouldn't like fall back into the '04 era if someone else took the reins. but my guess is that this sort of logic is partly his concern when he mentioned it in the announcement

frankly I wouldn't be comfortable with taking WATMM and doing something with it I didn't agree with

seems tho if he wants to retain the watmm name/image, then changing the name to something else (the dong lol) after he stops being admin is in the realm of possibility?

That's very sad to hear. And I was thinking the other day how I should really get a watmm subscription, I've postponed doing so for far too long. I think the community here grew a great bond over the years; I see it as that single place on the internet to hang around with like-minded people raving about weird electronic music; had plenty of moments where I laughed in real-life with someone's surreal jokes and coordinated rolling lols etc, and also teared up and got saddened to find out about a member's health difficulties or passing away. It's this common passion about music (not exclusively limited to electronic music, just music free from tags) that kept us connected - I'm gonna miss that.

If the forum could somehow be kept alive, that'd be awesome.

Can't add any more than what's been said but just to add another voice saying that I love visiting this forum.

I'm awkward irl and don't make friends easily but have always loved the conversations here over the past 20 years.  I learn so much from all you crazy bastards and I love watching and occasionally participating in the banter.  I will miss it deeply.

That being said, I can fully understand Joyrex's decision; my priorities in life have changed drastically as I've gotten older.

Here's hoping we can keep the site going as-is with a name and ownership change.

Logged in to see this. As someone who missed out on a lot on this site, but still love visiting to check out what you guys are into or talking about, I'm sad to hear this. I get why, it's very tough to support a forum server for a long time and it can be costly, and forums in general are a dying fad (which makes me sad as that's how a lot of my long time friends I still talk to were made, we just don't talk about SpongeBob anymore because we're adults now), but there's just a vibe of forums I love compared to social media. Twitter is shit. I get bored with Facebook outside of my radio hobby. All I do now is just chat on Discord and play Jackbox every day... (i need a life). I feel bad for not using this place more (irl got in the way), but I absolutely love the memories I do have of this place (that hot wheels thread and the responses I got was hilarious), and the hype for stuff like Warp30 was awesome.

I'm still listening to a lot of electronic (I really love the new Donato Dozzy and Yimino), but I got a lot of catch up to do. I got back into indie stuff. I will say I hope maybe there's a way to save the sites archives or hopefully keep it a float. I'd happily donate, but if it's not the case, I'll be sad when this place is gone. And I'll regret not using it more.

One thing is for sure. This will motivate people to visit forum more often now, a real activity bump.

I've only been WATMM-ing for 16 years but I want to be WATMM-ing for 160 more.

17 years here. Joined WATMM when there was still speculation whether Tuss is Rich or not. Fun times.
