I avoided Silent Hill: Homecoming merely because of the fact that they decided to scrap the Japanese game design, that was loved and praised by all, and went for the horrible design that can be seen in the Hollywood clusterfuck of a movie where all the Silent Hill nurses are wearing push up bras and breakdance their way through the corridors.

Btw. the trailer for the new Silent Hill game seems to have gone under everyone's noses.

I hope you were facepalming the fact nobody noticed it, as that looked pretty good...

silent hill: homecoming is probably one of the worst survival horror games i've ever played simply because of the fact that they got rid of the 180 degree spin and there is no way to adjust camera speed. this can be extremely frustrating when your just exploring the environment and it takes forever to turn around.

edit- sorry, THE worst survival horror game.

Ok - I'm going to go ahead and say that, yeah, I'm not far enough in the game to really get a full sense of whether it's totally awesome or just pretty cool at this point.

But, isn't part of building tension in a game like this making it so you can only turn the camera so fast? Yes, no quick 180, but you can dodge now which is pretty effective in terms of changing your axis.

Can't be THE worst survival horror game - I'd give Resident Evil 5 that title before this because it wasn't horrifying. Or scary.

Looks just like any other survival horror games and not like a Silent Hill game.

Agreed - RE5 was something out of the dark ages how it controlled, and was so.fucking.slow. Shame too, since I always liked the RE series, but I guess the time between 4 and 5 and how much better most control schemes for other games have gotten have caused it to fall behind.

Ok, let me rephrase that. It looks like Silent Hill the movie and not Silent Hill the game.

AH - I haven't seen that movie (heard it was awful). Explains my confusion!

silent hill 2 and 3 both had the 180 turn and were, imo, the scariest games ever made. not including the turn doesn't affect the scare factor at all. it's just bad game design. it takes me twice as long to explore dead ends as it did in the other games. this might be trivial to some, but it definitely affects my experience with the game.

what makes for a frightening game experience, again imo, is having a character who doesn't know how to do anything except for fire a gun, swing an axe and turn around and run for their life.

being able to dodge is nice, but it makes the character too capable in action. i'll take the quick turn any day over it.

Edited by Frank Pools

resident evil 4 saw the series go from survival horror to just an action game. there wasn't any of the claustrophobia and tension of the previous games. i'll admit here that i have never played any of the older games through. i always started them and quickly became frustrated with the controls and moved on. i played through 4 and 5, though, and you definitely see the series take a turn there.

as for silent hill... i'm a big fan. never played 1 and 2 but 3 and 4 are old favorites. yeah, "the room" eventually grew on me. i finished homecoming, but i wasn't amazed. the combat was frustrating. so frustrating. i also did not enjoy the art direction. i mean, jesus fuck, i know that big fans are a staple of the otherworld, but do we have to have walls and walls of them? the transitions into the otherworld were lame as well.

homecoming also lacked a lot of the subtle details that made silent hill 3 really awesome, like walls that randomly started bleeding and pulsing and other environmental tidbits like that.

the plot was decent though and i actually enjoyed a few of the locations (the hotel was cool, save for pyramid head's little appearance). i loved the doll monster boss. best part of the game and 10x better than the end boss. it had that ol' silent hill spirit!

anyway, this trailer reminds me of alan wake, which was... such utter shit. remembering that game has left a bad taste in my mouth. i wanted to like it, but after that GODDAMN ENDING THAT FORCES ME TO BUY DLC TO CONTINUE THE JOURNEY, i am just angered and disappointed in video games.

currently playing red dead redemption. beat the game. it's art.

wtf you talkin about

the ending was great, its not like the story was so short or there was a cliff hanger or anything..

they are continuing the story with DLC chapters instead of making a whole new game that would take them another 5 years. nothing wrong with that.

it wasn't a cliff hanger? wtf, did we play the same game?

oh yeah, "it's not a lake, it's an ocean," that explains the ENTIRE game to me.

fuck off, the ending was awful and didn't explain anything. they're using the dlc to milk money out of people who want closure on what was happening in the game.

Finally passed the asteroid blaster on Dead Space last night - in the hydroponics section. More zero-G madness!

I was worried I would never pass that portion. Gnashed my teeth on it for a while and eventually moved on though. I can't imagine getting the achievement for a perfect game of that shit.

Deadspace was a good, fairly tense game with a few nice surprises, but what kept me really interested was in upgrading all my weapons. upgrade the line gun all the way. seriously. holy shit, so great. The standard blaster and buzzsaw are also pretty great.

I think somewhere towards the end of the game, it failed to scare me anymore, and there are portions where you get loaded up with so much ammo you think there is going to be a massive, fun fight ahead, when it's all just a tease. Still, glad I finished it and if you have the time i hear it's more fun when you unlock the hardest mode.

And the game has some of the nicest art/design in a mainstream sci fi game in a long time. It's mechanistic and vaguely japanese. I love that most of the weapons are unusual mining tools. Dead space 2 has a nice new helmet...

Man if you're a fan of the series then you have to play Silent Hill 2 - it's always been seen by fans as the pinnacle of the franchise ... (although personally my favourite is 3, but then I'm weird)

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

OMFG - the 'get a perfect score in the shooting gallery' IS the asteroid blaster segment? FML

I'm trying to get the trophy (Playstation) where you beat the whole game with just the Plasma Laser (the default weapon). So far, so good, but ammo is getting scarce, and I have to sell the other ammo I find just to buy ammo for it.

Hopefully if these 'HD remakes' that Sony is having good fortune with continues, perhaps Konami will redo Silent Hill 1-3 in HD.

Nah I can see how 3 can be your favourite. To me it's just as good as 2, but can't really be compared cause it's a whole different approach. 3 is more in-your-face scary, 2 stays with you for longer as it resonates the morbidest atmosphere.

you're getting close to where I am. boss at End of stage 6 for me. It took me several tries for the asteroids, then I woke up the next day and realized you could use both triggers/both cannons, made it a lot easier.

I figured out the two triggers/two guns things straight off - what helped for me was realizing to shoot what was closest first, then go to the next closest, etc. and adjust if something came faster than the rest of them. Also, the asteroids that hit outside your view port don't do as much damage.

It took me a few tries too. But ya, that was the strategy I used.

Dusted off my GC and am finally playing the Resident Evil remake despite owning it for three years. Seems pretty good and creepy enough. Unfortunately I did not torch all the zombies I shot and there are many Crimson Heads running at me and I've run out of bullets. Fucking piss. Pretty sure this game is mostly about running away from things. Original survival horror ftw.

Also have been playing Fallout 3. Kinda surprised by how fun it is to just run around and explore.

I need some more 360 games. Was thinking about playing SH: Homecoming but I don't want to be too disappointed by it. It seems like it is more influenced by the film or something. Also, I always kinda figured that only James could see Pyramid Head. I guess not.
