awepittance
i actually feel like a generic dad or something for liking Sarah Marshall so much but i have to admit i fucking loved it. I think it's superior to really anything Apatow has written or directed. Get him to the greek was a good spinoff but not quite as satisfying. I expected to find russel brand to be the centerpiece of the humor in Greek but clearly Jonah Hill stole the show. That guy is capable of some pretty funny shit, his role in Cyrus was great. Ego Posted January 30, 2011 Report Share Hide Delete Posted January 30, 2011 Na srebrnym globie (On the Silver Globe) Incredibly dark and intense. I often got lost during all the weird ramblings (maybe that was the point) but was captivated by that newly created society and how their ideas and beliefs developed. Very unique, too bad they didn't finish it. 4/5 Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/43385-a-few-films-recently-watched/page/266/#findComment-1505944 Share on other sites
awepittance
the Green Hornet - 4/10 for a long time i figured nothing could 'top' Michael Gondry's worst movie Human Nature, but i was clearly proven wrong last week while watching this barely 3d movie called the Green Hornet. First of all Ebert is 100% right, STOP doing 3d movie 'conversions' on movies filmed with a dark lighting style to them. It just doesnt fucking work it looks weak, "shit dont sound right" - dr. dooom. Gondry busted out about 4-5 really clever uses of 3d in the film, but those interesting/creative experiments could not save this abysmal film. positives: the guy who played jew hunter in inglorious basterds was very funny, an insecure psychopath murderer, it was paced well it didn't feel too slow in any part of the movie. lots of nonchalant murders take place, the Green hornet doesnt put any hand cuffs on people he just ambiently beats people to death, but its not focused on enough in the movie to make it dark or interesting in any way. And luckily they didn't try to jam in some sort of forced-ass Watchman movie style 'are they good guys or bad guys' ruiner moments. negatives: the score sucked, michel gondry's worst film. The chemistry between the two main characters felt forced, Jack Black and Mos Def were 100x more captivating to watch on screen together. Guest vodor
the wire - 5/5 - if my scale was 100 it'd be 100/100, or if it was 1000 it'd be 1000/1000. brilliant, moving, perfect series. i started the series about 2 years ago, so i took my sweet time. i greedily plowed through season 5 in about a week though. i just finished tonight. i'm in some sort of ambiguous emotional state still. sooooo goooooooooooood. i watched one of the special features things called "the odyssey" after and it blew my mind how tons of the actors originally read for different roles than they ended up in, but they all turned out so perfectly. can you imagine cedrick's actor as bubbles? wtf!! and the plan was for omar to be 7 episodes, heh! but he was an amazing character and they weaved him into much more than 7 perfectly. so much love. SR4
im in the midst of watching the wire myself, waiting for the last half of season 5 from netflix. sooo many awesome characters...its cliche, but you know youve hit a great series if you cant pick "the best" character... Bunny Colvin, Daniels, Lester Freamon, Omar, Avon and Marlo's rivalry, Chris and Snoop, Bubbles, Bodie, D'Angelo teaching his boys how to play chess, Frank Sobotka, almost all of the kids from Season 4. I remember my friends telling me 3 was the apex of it all...but honestly Season 4 was my personal favorite...there was so much there....im still getting used to the reporters in season 5....most of the acting is meh... also, i remember early on thinking McNulty's Baltimore accent was particularly more awful than the other characters....come to find out hes British...wtf? he did a great job for the most part. heres the scene that made me suspicious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg_3ZSeHL4g Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Hide SR4's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/43385-a-few-films-recently-watched/page/266/#findComment-1506194 Share on other sites

lumpenprol
Just watched the Town. Was pretty good, though a bit thin and cliche. Affleck's acting was all over the place, surprisingly good in spots and predictably lacking in others. Renner was good in every scene he was in. Thought the FBI guy from Mad Men actually wasn't very good. My interest in the characters and scenarios never rose above a simmer. Action was top notch though! Overall hoped it'd be better. One of those very competent films that doesn't leave much of an impression. lumpenprol
One thing I couldn't understand is Reveal hidden contents Why they didn't show more of Affleck's anguish when his best friend is being gunned down by the police? After all this is the friend who rightly or wrongly sacrificed 9 years of his life in jail for the dude. I think the emotional tension of that moment could have been ratcheted up a lot more, but instead you just had Affleck looking on going "golly gee!" and then stealing a car and driving off. It seemed like he didn't know how he wanted the audience to feel at the end of the film. He wanted you to see Affleck as the hero, he kills the evil florist dude and then runs off into the sunset alone, nobly. But the reality is he let his friend get gunned down so he could make a clean escape. All it would have taken would have been a few shots of him clenching and unclenching his fist, a good closeup reaction shot of his face, and then he leaves. It would have been one of those "oh shit" harsh film endings that you remember forever, like the end of Gallipoli. The point of the movie was not the love story, even though they tried really hard to make it work. The point to me seemed to be, how far are you willing to go, what are you willing to sacrifice, to escape from a life of crime? Just my .02. Guest analogue wings
I thought it was a bit of an ethically compromised film. Reveal hidden contents Afflecks gf is sposed to be stoked with the bag of blood money she gets at the end. And the crooks gunning down all the cops at the end is treated about as seriously as Chuck Norris gunning down a bunch of turr-ists. Renner was good but his character was a hopeless crime movie cliche Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/43385-a-few-films-recently-watched/page/266/#findComment-1506684 Share on other sites
lumpenprol
all good points. The whole thing was cliche, apart from the location(s). I did really like a few things about the film though Reveal hidden contents - the attention to detail in how the heists actually went down, such as the frying of the surveillance video in the microwave, the conversations with the guards, etc - the fact that much of the "climactic shootout" takes place in a cramped and unglamorous little underground garage - the fact that they didn't make the "omg he has a fighting irish tattoo on the back of his neck!" reveal a central plot point of the film. That lunch scene with Affleck, Renner, and the bank girl was the tensest scene in the film, and it worked precisely because what you kept expecting to happen didn't happen.
