Heat

I had a good memory of this film but it didnt hold up well in 2012. the story was weak, pacino was awful. and it was 2 hours and 40 minutes. i could not remember a time when I was not watching this film. ugh. some good parts but overall not good.

Pacino has been so terrible since, like, 1979, that all I want to do whenever I see Pacino is kick him in the nuts.

I'm forcibly including Scarface in the Terrible Pacino Era because unlike De Niro, Pacino doesn't seem to be in on his own joke, even though the joke can be occasionally amusing, as in Scarface.

The sound design in Heat is still amazing, the weapons sound so heavy and powerful, for those scenes alone it's worth to watch the movie.

I think heat suffers by being kinda obvious where its going. maybe when it came out we didnt EXPECT twists and turns in movies like we do now.

I was trying to think of pacino's best work aside from godfather what else do we have? i can't remember scareface at all.

i read that in heat his character was supposed to have a coke addiction but it got cut out. might explain why he played it that way

looking at michael mann;s imdb directorial list i can also see I am not a fan of his work either so maybe heat was just a bad choice for me. last one i saw was public enemies which wasn't much good

finally saw Drive....really great film...straightforward but still feels noirish....the soundtrk is fucking amazing, huge scarface tribute (and i never thought I could say that as a compliment). beautiful cinematography....Gosling is fantastic....did not expect this performance....the way he cracks some of his words under pressure...great stuff.

8/10

I love Heat. I just love the shit out of it and if that's wrong, I don't wanna be right.

Just finished watching Twin Peaks after so long trying to get through it. Hurray for unemployment.

Jesus christ, I loved it. Even though some of the '92 special effects had laughing.

The last episode might be the most unnerving thing I've ever watched. Fucking loved it.

underexposed is correct. no oscar noms for either though and I think they were both very much of the year they were made and relevant. but instead they concentrate on movies about the past. not that the oscars are relevant but you know it'd be nice if they were

ides of march was the better of the two. interesting look at how good politicians get corrupted. it seemed realistic too - something that boss failed at by making tom kane a monster.

considering rewatching the west wing - think it'll hold up and still be relevant?

I think Ides of March and Margin Call were very underated last year

i tried to watch Margin Call but fell asleep, given that it's inexplicably Rush Limbaugh's favorite movie of 2011 i will watch it one of these days just out of sheer curiosity

The Secret World of Arriety - 5/10 - I never read the book it's based on but it felt like the story had just started to get interesting when the movie ended. The beginning of the film felt very slow, so much that it felt a bit disconnected from the rest. There are also a few other things (disappearing and reappearing characters, unclear motivations) that make me think maybe the American version was truncated. But one of the biggest offences in the film is the music. There's a theme song that plays throughout the film that is just such awful treacle, sung by a twelve year old. Made me miss Joe Hisaishi's scores for Miyazaki's films. Also, it could be me but the animation at the beginning seemed noticeably sloppier than the rest of the film.

"Jeg er Levende"/"I am Alive"

A short, 40 minute portrait of danish poet Søren Ulrik Thomsen directed by Jørgen Leth.

Very, very enjoyable. Insightful, subtle portrait and the jazzy music and poetic, melancholic imagery was so god damn good.

So good that I even ordered the record by the artists right away. Tomasz Stánko - Litania: The Music of Krysztof Komeda.
