i heard that quaristice is a fake album? thats what the all hype is about on last.fm - is this true or bullshit?

the truth of it is

during the Untilted release, many fakes were made. everybody got so caught up in them that Sean and Rob forgot they were Autechre, and joined the fake-making brigade.

after Untitled came out they eventually found their fakes on their hard drive, tagged as Autechre that they hadn't heard before because they'd forgotten all about it, and they thought it was pretty good, so they released it for a laugh

That's exactly what it sounds like! But that doesn't mean it's not good... it's certainly not great but it's got a lot of good bits in it

anyone know of place in US to buy presale

Cheaper at Bleep, I paid $18.88 shipped. I'm sure it'll be cheaper once it's officially released in the US, but who knows how soon that'll be.

I think Tri Repetae++ is a good starting point. Amber and Incunabula are also easy starting points but very different from their latter work. Autechre changes from release to release more than just about any musical act out there.

Personally Chiastic Slide is my favorite album by them, but LP5 is another favorite and prolly the album most people can agree on being one of if not the greatest. I love all their releases except for Untilted, Quaristice and the awful Basscadet ep. I don't hate Untilted or Quaristice, I just don't care for them. Untilted is soulless and Quaristice is boring for me.

As you might be aware, Autechre went from making music that was relatively accessible "ambient techno" to intricate works of layered noise and texture, so bear that in mind... Amber sounds NOTHING like Draft 7.30.

If I was to say what their best album is, I would probably say Chiastic Slide or LP5 because they have a nice balance of interesting, complex sound design and poignant, well constructed melodies. They're both quite visceral and because they're both loud and abrassive but heart wrenching and sinister they're pretty over whelming on first listen (think Teartear x 100).

Chiastic Slide sounds more mechanical, why LP5 sounds more digital... as if Chiastic Slide was made from rusty, steam powered machines and LP5 was made from computers and robots.

I think I prefer LP5 a little bit more.

Well put - chiastic and lp5 are my favorite albums too for more or less the same reasons. For someone new to autechre, I've always thought that going chronologically through their material is the best bet, because you get to hear how their sound develops and mutates from one release to the next.

5x, Draft has always been my favourite, closely followed by Chiastic Slide.

Glad Chiastic Slide gets a lot of love these days. When I first joined it was not a popular choice but it has always been my favorite. That said, LP5, EP7, and Confield are all wicked too, I love the progression from album to album in those releases. Still love 'em but they kinda lost me a little bit at Draft, I haven't been nearly as excited about albums since.

Strangely enough, I haven't been feeling entirely up to EP7 much these days. Can't quite put my finger on why, but it hasn't been jumping at me to play it for the last little while. Confield has always been fairly low in my rotation as well. I love both of these albums but I just prefer most other Ae over these two.

I agree with this. I don't like Draft much at all, but it has a few moments of awesomeness.

Confield is a masterpiece but certainly not one I would recommend to someone new. It's also not very representitive of their work... it sounds so much more organic. To use a similar analogy to what I said before; if Chiastic Slide is made from machines and LP5 made from robots, Confield is made from the ancient, moss covered ruins of an advanced alien race that died out thousands of years ago. Like something from a metroid game :P

Could it be you're not listening hard enough?

Just kidding man, give them another spin soon though, you may change your mind. These two slowly moved up the ranks for me to be two of my favorites.

At the end of the day everybody's gonna like something different. I see how many people like Draft and I wish I could hear what all the fuss was about. I've given it over 50 listens by now and while I don't think it is a bad release it's just not my thing. I still give it a spin every now and then though and definitely appreciate it a lot more than I used to.

I totally disagree, and might say I feel the exact opposite way.

But as is the case for many, we feel differently about the albums with each listen. For me, my feelings on an Autechre album greatly depend on my mood. I might find it irritating as fuck one time, and intricate and mind-blowing the next. But last I checked, Confield mostly irritated me and I found more enjoyable sounds and melodies in Draft. Also, we seek out different things in music so it's obviously subjective.

EP7 has, at times, been one of my favourites. As far as Draft is concerned, I think the secret to understanding the album lies within Surripere.

EP7 is special to me because it's the first one I got into. The first album I ever got was Quaristice, which is a really bad "welcome to Autechre" album with how abstract it is in places. Though it's now tied for my top favorite with Draft 7.30 and EP7.

EP7 has Dropp, Pir, Outpt, Rpeg, Liccflii, and Netlon Sentinel which is enough for me to love it forever.

Draft 7.30 is downright wicked. I love IV VV IV VV VIII, 6IE.CR, V-Proc, Surripere, and Tapr.

Some of Autechre's EPs I've neglected and I don't think I've given Chiastic Slide enough of a chance to like it.
