Hi Alex, not seen you about here for a while. Brooklyn's a decent flavourful lager, I know a few bars and restaurants down here that stock it.

 

This week I've been drinking red wine again for the first time in a while... Sainsburies do this Carta Roja monastrell which is a pretty nice drop:

This is in addition to standard gin and tonics, and plenty of Jim Beam.

i didn't like this as much as draught guinness when i tried it a couple of years ago, but my taste for stouts, ales and porters has developed loads since so maybe i should give it another go. do you mean draught guinness is watery? i thought it was more silky smooth and creamy.

 

i had 'hot cross ale' at the weekend which was totally rank unfinishable sweet piss but saved the day with a beautiful dark chocolate porter and a few of those dark erdingers.

 

morrisons has an excellent selection of interesting brews btw.

 

I have a hunch the standard Guinness exported to the states is a bit different from the standard Guinness available on draught in the Isles.

 

I still like Guinness on tap (not the nitro cap bottle/can "draught", which makes everything taste like the nitro) but after a few years of imperial stouts etc, it's a little too thin in the mouthfeel/flavor department for me to love. It's still my go to, along with something like Sam Adams Boston Lager, if at a restaurant that doesn't really do the full-on beer snob thing.

 

But yeah, all the Irish folks I know around here swear Guinness is a lot more flavorful back home. I don't know if there's some psychological wish-fulfillment at play or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a slightly different, weaker brew coming to the US, given how piss-weak beers in the States were expected to be until the microbrew scene kicked off.

it's definately better in ireland and i think it's down to how it's looked after and poured. in scotland you can get as good a pint in decent bars, but then go to another bar and get a really shit pint... and none of this extra cold nonsense.

 

also isn't that foreign extra stuff about 9%abv?

brooklyn lager is one of my favorites for the summer. it's especially delicious in the can. the brown is delightful as well.

Totally agree about Brooklyn lager -- really solid. Same goes for Anchor.

 

Oh -- over Easter, I was at my fiancee's aunt's and she had this lying around in her fridge:

It's 7.5% and much hoppier/fuller bodied. It's not quite Imperial Stout level, but it's pretty fucking robust.

My roommate and I did a raspberry blonde ale about a month ago. It tasted a lot like the Samuel Smith raspberry, but a little more tart. Also, it was about 10% abv, haha.

Sure in some pubs they'll only let a person with the experience pour you a Guinness. No young people pouring it. Although when you first start working, it is the 1st thing they teach you.

 

But the local I go does a fantastic Guinness, and then 5 minutes down the road is where they do the worst guinness (Jesus christ, awful awful stuff)

Strange. Surely it's all the same guinness, with the thick head and the five minute wait on a pint. Perhaps some pubs don't have their nitrogen infusion working properly.
