Finished the second, and final season of Rome. It was described to me as GOT before GOT and that take was essentially on point. Really strong characters with a ton of political intrigue, romance and violence with the brutal backdrop of Roman society at the time. The story focuses mostly on two centurions (who were actually mentioned in Cesar’s accounts, very briefly, despite the fact that anyone of the plebeian class’ existence were omitted apparently) as rivals turned friends. Lucius Vorenas is stoic and loyal where Titus Pullo is more of defiant and wears his heart on his gauntlets.

After a long campaign in Gaol (France) they come back to Rome as veterans looking to start life anew, thinking their days of soldiering are behind them only to find that their reputations, and perhaps their nature, will not allow it, and eventually they get pulled into a shitstorm that lands them on opposing sides of rival factions. That’s basically the gist of it. You also get in depth storylines with Julius and Octavian Cesar, Cisero, Brutus and Cassius, Marc Antony and Cleopatra, etc. With really good performances by all. For only being 2 seasons I think they did a good job of wrapping things up and giving some closure when it ended. Heavily recommended.

Been watching Dandadan (ダンダダン) which has been pretty entertaining so far. Up to episode 4 but since each episode is short I'm sure some on here could power through the existing nine episodes (10th to be aired December 6th) pretty quickly.

Been watching The Penguin. It's very good and worth the hype. Don't usually do DC or Marvel stuff but there's no action heroes in it.

just started the Penguin also. I re-watched The Batman first since I couldn't remember really anything about the Penguin character from it. someone here mentioned it is essentially a mafia show, which I agree with. I keep forgetting that is Colin Farrell under there.

Sounds like a scam. You’re getting sucked into the DC universe (or MULTIVERSE if we’re splitting hairs) thanks to some executive who slapped the Penguin’s name on top of what was likely a dark and gritty script by some writer who just wanted to tell a story about the mafia. 3 years from now your gonna be drunk, screaming at the screen when alternate-raced Thor puts the infinity shackles on your precious Penguin and has him imprisoned beneath the rainbow bridge in Valhalla for conspiring with female Wolverine to steal the anklet of creation. Fuck that. Just watch the Sopranos again.

What else would you recommend from the studio? I think this is the first anime I've watched from them.

oh I see the guy who co-founded is the guy who directed Mind Game. That was super good, I’ll def have to check out more.

Very bizarre, first episode is a generic Suicide Squad, 2nd episode.. yeah, pretty dark with a fair amount of cringe.

Just read this lol. Hah! Yes The Penguin does remind me of a gothic Tony Soprano, and he has a mad mother. But I think I'll be sticking to my current DC and Marvel film count of one (Guardians Of The Galaxy, which was pretty good tbf). The C Nolan films don't count 😉

terrible (ish) season for what has a been an okay show. they've been decided to milk this thing to the point where the last episode is still "coming soon"

Silo S2 is going ok so far but suffering from 'every character has to have a dramatic arc' syndrome

also yes. I'm three episodes in and it's good. not as tight as it should be, sometimes shit just happens and you're like "ok", but it does a good job at intrigue and morally complex characters. I like that it avoids both fetishising the orient and making caricatures of western villains.

i've noticed this a while ago but forgot to post it... @1:04 when Flora is packing burgers, there's an uncredited Akira sample and that pisses me off, i mean it's a crucial part of the show cause it's basically her theme song...

The Penguin. Colin Farrell did most of the heavy lifting here (him and his make-up department). His performance was a joy to watch. Most other characters were quite bland and annoying. Way to many mediocre and longwinded dialogue sequences often gave it a cheap tv-drama kind of feel. Occasional moments of violent action lacked any impact or suspense. It does build up to something truly great and twisted. The ending more than makes up for the many flaws.

Now watching Dan Da Dan (anime). A wacky supernatural comedy about stolen testicles. Effortlessly shifts from hyperkinetic action to small lingering authentic character moments (and suddenly a backstory of a minor villain that's genuinely poetic and heartbreaking). Extremely well animated as well. If titles like FLCL or Mob Psycho mean anything to you, this is worth checking out.

Turbo Granny is my favourite character in anything I've seen in recent years.

season-1

i guess this was necessary. some really good casting eg. james martinez for batista. problem is that it's basically the same thing with different actors. the actor playing deb is annoying and so is slater. it also seems to have a remarkably lower budget so i'm guessing they're not planning on having this go on for too long (?)
