got me right in the feels.. both seasons. 

i'm 2 episodes deep into "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and it's really good. quite moving and strangely layered with real and surreal and all out fantasy but also tugs on heart strings. cinematography is stunning at times. it's immersive.

There’s another sequel show on the horizon as well. I’d rather have seen them do a series based on season 1, Dexter and the Ice Truck killer as kids, his mom in the bathtub of blood, Harry adopting him, etc.

jesus christ they might as well bring his sister back to life somehow. Debra was kind of the best thing about that show. also, maybe they'll pronounce Brickell Avenue correctly sometime. it sounds like 'brickle' not BRICK-ELL you fucks!

also yes. I'm three episodes in and it's good. not as tight as it should be, sometimes shit just happens and you're like "ok", but it does a good job at intrigue and morally complex characters. I like that it avoids both fetishising the orient and making caricatures of western villains.

I've been doing a second pass on this (something I almost never do this soon, it's that good) and my comments about some parts of the storytelling being sloppy were ill-informed. everything is purposeful. it can just seem confusing at first because there's a lot of subtext that you might miss on your first viewing, before you know how it all fits together.

it only gets better as it goes. first couple episodes set the scene. i found the british guy a bit much at times but i guess that's the character. but the series gets better and better imo. the first episode wasn't a winner for me but i bought in pretty quickly after that even though ya kinda know what's what and what will happen.

first episode's just setup, really. I thought it was fine.

talking about Blackthorne, this incarnation of Shogun is said to be (I haven't seen it) vastly better than the 1980 version which was primarily centred on him and was generally as eurocentric/white saviour-y as you'd expect. makes it really pleasing to see how hugely this show has succeeded as a more authentic period-accurate depiction of a foreign culture, primarily in its own language. people have always had a fascination with Japan and cool samurai shit so that has probably made it easier.

also there are also so many stellar performances by secondary characters, I struggle to pick the best one. it'd be Yabushige if it weren't for the fact that I consider him a primary character.

Asano is so fucking good as Yabushige. How do you make a dude that boiled people alive so likable?

Totally. I only vaguely remember the 80s version being a thing. This version is surely way more accurate and interesting for a million reasons. Definitely full of amazing performances. Japan and issues of that period being the focus is a relief. The actor playing the central Japanese character did an interview and said it was the role he’d been waiting to play his entire life as the person who united Japan is his favorite story and historical figure. So, seems things aligned

I'm gonna start watching season 2 of squid game and I expect it to be as shitty as the first one...

bigger budget equals more emotional and talky version of the first season (based on first 3 episodes)

more sappy than the first season? watched the last 2 eps of the 1st season cause I couldn't member shit and it was so cringey that I almost gouge my eyes out... after I watched the 1st ep of the 2nd season and thought it was considerably better... anyway it will all lead to those stupid games eventually so I'm gonna keep my expectations low...
