Really, though, who else would you even consider turning to when you need to move a regular quadrilateral around your apartment?

because normally, when someone hears aphex for the very first time, they ask for something similar

this, to an extend. but in general afx generated the hype that made squarepsuher, autechre, boards of canada semi-mainstrem bands.

and that's cool.

Honestly, is this a serious thread?

As serious as it can get

I was inspired by this http://forum.watmm.c...tus-so-popular/

yeah I wasn't sure if it was a parody thread or not, since it would seem that the appeal of Squarepusher is immediately obvious whereas Flying Lotus - not so much.

- For you.

It's a matter of taste.

again, i don't really hate skrillex as much as i hate the people that think that sort of music has any sort of integrity. i try to be open minded, and a lot of the time i employ a "well, each to his/her own" attitude towards personal preferences such as music taste and who knows, maybe it is original in its own way, sorta like a drawing by an autistic kid.

I personally consider Squarepusher a great artist, and definitely (a lot) better than 99% of music out there, but I would still put him slightly under Aphex, AE and Boc. Of course, I am talking from a point of his importance in electronic music (my opinion). Burningn'n Tree for example is such an incredible, although not that electronic (electronic sounding), album, but it immediately blows you away (at least me), and for me this is as good as jazz, or whatever you wish to call it, can get. My personal favourite from this album is Conumber - such an amazing track. The other album I truly adore of his, is Buzz Caner, and that album in my opinion truly needs more recognition, as it could be one of his most innovative, if not the most innovative albums, perhaps the most obvious example here being Dreaded Pestilence. My personal favourite here is Psultan Part 1. I generally like how Tom in Buzz Caner manages to combine interesting melodies and complex drum patterns, making one interesting, amazing album.

The man really deserves all the praise and respect he gets. Knows his way around a sequencer better than just about anyone, hell, some genres still can't catch up to the stuff he did 10 years ago. Maybe one of the best bass players around? Consistently releases music, but not to a point where it's a complete rehashing of previous material, despite those of us who just want to hear more machine gun funk and amens. Just think about the variety when it comes to all of his releases. From Buzz Caner to Music is Rotted One Note to Ultravisitor. Who else has that kind of depth, honestly? He's the fucking daddy.

Squarepusher > all, in my opinion.

separate question: is it possible to pick a single Squarepusher track that could represent his most-liked music? I mean, if you took the intersection of every Squarepusher fan's favourite tracks, what would be in there? I'm betting Port Rhombus would be one of them, if not the top one. definitely one of his finest moments.

although my guess is somewhat anecdotal, i would bet that 'beep street' and 'tundra' would be some other guesses.

oddly enough, i never was big into port rhombus until a few months ago. not exactly sure either.

there is no way I'd put BoC above Squarepusher. but then, my main Warp trifecta was always Autechre, Squarepusher and Aphex. I only got into BoC later. they have their own place amongst the greats of course, but honestly their music doesn't make your neurons fire the way Squarepusher's does, and they don't have half as much output.

yeah, Tundra4 too perhaps? Pretty much the quintessential Squarepusher track right there.

because hes able to write tunes with broad appeal, or at least incorporate elements of that into everything he does. what i mean by that is he could just sit back and release very plain and safe music. it would sound pleasing to most ears, he can create tracks with broad appeal at will. for instance maybe he could produce some album for Outkast or something and make it a pop album, he has the ability. but he chooses to do his own thing. maybe at some point he will just go the producer route and team up with some star and put out a monumental pop album, but he stays in the trenches and carve out his own sound.

maybe only aphex has this ability as well from the warp roster. im an autechre man myself but i can totally see squarepusher appeal.

Beep Street and Tundra were my very first exposures, come to think of it.

edit: ^ yes! The Exploding Psychology would definitely be in there. maybe also Go! Spastic and Tetra-sync. for some of the non (or less) electronic tracks, probably Iambic 5 and Iambic 9

Tetra sync... my first real squarepusher "experience" was with that track....

Lets face it, whether people like ufabulum or not, the guy is a fucking genius. No way around it.

Yup... Tetra sync was the first song I heard, and also one of the tracks that showcases a great deal of his different styles... lotsa class in that one. Love at first listen...

But I'm gonna go out on a limb... I'm gonna say Ecstatic Shock, off the new album. I've heard this track tons today... Has some of his playful elements, combined with excellent fusion jazz techniques, along with some wicked programming. Right up there with Port Rhombus and the like... but don't let me hype it up. Listen to it with an open mind, and free of expectations.

He's still got it... :music:

Almost every year he takes out an album since 1995... It's normal that he's so popular! Nobody can miss a track (whatever) of him... And the number of taken out albums, we cannot miss him...

Every person has at least a good souvenir of one of these albums as Feed Me Weird Things, Hard Normal Daddy, Music Is Rotted One Note, Selection Sixteen, Go Plastic, Ultravisitor, Etc. - and some of remixes he did/made

Others (BoC or Flying Lotus or AE) did not take out so many albums as him except for Richard D. James or Aaron Funk...

I'm pretty sure Ae's discography is longer, especially if you count all their collabs and other projects

lol - can u understand me, i can't like AE... so i'm not interesting of them... so, yes, i do see their discography b4 writing my post! ;-) But they took out fewer albums than Richard D. James, Squarepusher & Venetian Snares...
