Things people write on Facebook

shit goes both ways. here at work, young'uns (grads fresh out of uni) disdain older folk who have been around a while and refuse to mix/socialise with them. usually they don't even have a good reason why, it's just fear/ninnyism.

a lot of the time ageism comes from simple reactionary responses to feeling like you're being threatened by the other age groups in some way. hence older people talking about how younger people are selfish, stupid, inexperienced and panicky (which may or may not be true) - it's a defense mechanism against feeling threatened by "pretty young things". older people in turn will be mocked by younger people as slow, out of touch, incapable of learning new things, etc as a defense mechanism against feeling controlled or judged by older authority-type figures.

ageism is an understated type of discrimination. especially in the workplace.

Yeah, I've mostly experienced ageism from older people, in previous workplaces (my current one is pretty amazing for equality/tolerance though). At my previous job, I was the 'new kid' for three years, despite constantly innovating and refining some of the processes used by the older people.. I guess to be fair it's probably a bit unsettling having someone ~20 years younger than you coming in and doing a better job than you. I'm gonna try not to forget what it's like being picked on by older people though, and try my best to be tolerant, because fuck ageism, hey.

only way to get past it

ageism is a weird one because many people develop it insidiously as a consequence of simply aging normally, without any external influence. take a snapshot of yourself at point x in time, take another snapshot at x + 10 yrs, your whole outlook changes between those two points. it's not like racism or sexism which are usually deliberate choices and which you tend to hold on to if it's a particularly entrenched opinion of yours. with ageism you move between two polar opposites naturally over time. it's weird.

actually, now that I think about it, aside from individual tolerance, the only way to move past this problem as a society is to stop encouraging it as a society. there's so much social pressure/bullshit around ageing. we foster it with culture and advertising. social media/Facefuck too.

One thing facebook helped me consider- with regards to my own posts- is how I see/show myself to others. Fb was quite freeing in the idea that-- I truly just, am who I am. Of course I'm not gonna visit Granny Scroggins in a nursing home, wearing raver pants and rolling hard, start liquid dancing in her face with glowsticks and shit, but at the same time, I don't think it's necessary to change much when interacting with others. I have friends and relatives on facebook, but instead of putting them into groups, I'll just post to everybody some rant about LSD and nipples, because-- that's who I am. And there is some freedom in realizing that it's okay to be comfortable with the self in all circumstances, if that even makes sense. It's awkward to think, that some friends know more about me than blood family.

All right-- I'm off to see Granny Scroggins in the nursing home. Gonna go smoke crack and have a wank 3 inches from her face. *KEEP IT REAL*

I've never had an issue with ageism because nobody is sure just how old I am. That and I am a fucking giant so it is easier not to annoy me.

Two of my second cousins are albinos, one of them introduced me to a spot of hash when i was sixteen whilst we walked through the gardens of versailles which was near his house.
