Hail Sagan
The Boy and the Heron This was legitimately stunning to look at in parts. Visually it was great throughout but there were quite a few backgrounds that warranted their own art exhibits. It kinda struck me in a similar way Jodorowsky’s La Danza De La Realidad did, both films by venerable visionaries that were semi-autobiographical in nature with childhood’s trauma and wonder woven into a dreamlike spectacle that’s heavily steeped in symbolism throughout. I’ll rewatch it again soon and try to analyze it more later but on first watch I caught myself trying to tease meaning out of certain scenes but found it just distracted me from the beautiful adventure on screen. Time to go watch all his other films now I guess. Expand I quite enjoyed that flick, very lanthimos, personally don't think there's too much point delving too deep into it, it's surrealism, like watching Lynch or some such, I just enjoyed it for for being mad and different, I'm sure there are scholar's who will tell you it's about power and control or the modern human condition of madness, I like to just enjoy flicks like that for being a bit mad, I think you could get bogged down in deeper meaning but like most art it's supposed to make you think and emote, no right or wrong just something that stirs the loins, like listening to a great singer in a language that you can't understand. YELLOW
Saw "2001: A Space Odyssey" for the first time on Saturday. There was a 70mm showing about 90 minutes away and I decided to bite the bullet. I think I had always been "saving" that movie for a special occasion and it definitely lived up to it. chenGOD
Was on a plane for a few hours so watched some films. Nothing particularly engaging. One of them was the much talked about "Civil War" from Alex Garland. Thought it was quite weak actually. The political backdrop was...not explained at all? Ron Burgundy was a fascist? The Western Forces are depicted as "rebels" but somehow have an infrastructure and logistics to equip a modern military force. Character development - non-existent. Kirsten Dunst's character as the wizened veteran with a superficial two-minute backstory. The kid photographer* going from innocent to hard-boiled through the course of the movie because of...seeing some people get killed? The magical african-american friend did the standard, and Pablo Escobar may as well not have been in the movie. Sure the one scene with Meth Damon was "intense" but, one scene doesn't make a movie. 5/10 - interesting story potential, terrible execution. *Who the fuck shoots on film anymore beyond artists? I've known a few photojournalists (they do tend to be insane) and they were all using digital even back in 2015. The sectioning up made it feel kinda short even though its almost 3 hours long and I kinda wished each part was longer, with that pacing and atmosphere they could have easily been great full length films on their own i reckon. It was still pretty neat though, with the same actors playing the parts like a Jesse Plemons & Co. oddball theatre group or sketch show type feel.
